Half the reason I like to watch The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is for the band. I haven’t watched many other PM talk shows, so are there other good bands on other talk shows I should be checking out?

I’m not a super regular viewer of late night talk shows, but Doc Severinsen on the Tonight Show is pretty good.

The TiVo still records reruns of Johnny Carson, and yes, listening to that band is a nice part of the show.

Yeah. Doc Severinsen and the Tonight Show Band. It never got any better than this. That’s Doc in one his signature loud blazers, and that’s the incomparable Snooky Young on jazz trumpet.

All of it. The Tonight Show Band was one of the last great bands of its kind. My last trumpet teacher, Ray Crisara, was very close friends with Doc. You’d be sitting in a lesson, the phone rings, and Mr. Crisara says, “Well hello, Doc, how are you?” Severinsen came and did a master class and concert once. What an extraordinary player.
Some years ago, he moved down to Mexico. He started going to this local bar where a local band was playing, and he asked if he could sit in for a set. The band thought, who is this crazy old gringo? But the wife of one of the guys recognized him and told her husband that he’d better let Doc sit in. So they did, and Doc ended up going on the road and taking the band with him.
