Kinja'd!!!

Pushbutton gear selection is a un-needed solution that might kill you if you are standing around a new Terrain.

My father’s friend had a loaner and was parking. Per his report;

“She is older but competent. Driving a loaner while her car was being serviced. Arrived at daily mass and parked in regular place. Pushed the wrong button and jumped the low curb and hit a iron railing along a steps dead-on. Accordioned about 8 ft. of rail while taking out the left headlight. 2 or 3000 dollars damage total, maybe more. Yuck. Shook her up. Needed a driver after mass to take her home. Afraid of the car. Feel sorry for her.”.

It’s what happens when marketing and product planning types make engineering decisions. They do stuff for originality, forgetting that people need to operate this stuff while being distracted.

Similar to the the time that the product planning folks decided the key was too stiff and made it easier to turn......

Here’s an article on it...

As the article said, I’d be not a single car ride would go by without a passenger putting the car into neutral or park “for the lulz”.

I mean... I’ve done it with traditional shifte- err I mean my asshole friends have done it with traditional shifters...

these push-button/dial selectors will simply ignore any attempt to put the transmission into “P” if the vehicle speed is >= 1 mph.

not sure about “N.”

sorry, that account is missing a few steps. none of those buttons make the car move when pressed (or pulled, in the case of “R” and “D.”)

if she managed to accordion about 8 ft of rail and cause that much damage, she stepped on the gas pedal. Yes, she did. an idling car isn’t going to jump a curb and damage that much guardrail.

Accordioned 8ft of iron railing? Forgiven for toughness

See, I don’t trust that. I’ve seen how clueless old people react to things.

I actually don’t mind these button things, it makes sense in some ways, if you do not want to shift them gears yourself why put a massive obtrusive umbrella handle in the middle of the console if a few buttons will do? There is technology enough to prevent accidents for the most part. People are just clueless around cars.

There’s always this solution, and it’s even what the old people are used to:

Sure. I agree, but done in a more subtle manner.

That’s not how old Americans expect the shift pattern to be, they expect P-R-N-D-L (from top to bottom), and for the shifter to stay in the selected position.

(That Mercedes shifter is really R-N-return to center-N-D, with that pushbutton for park, IIRC.)

nope, those are even worse. why? same reason the ZF monostable selector is bad.

it looks like a conventional gear selector, but works differently.

Electronic shifters will go to N or R while moving, though with R it will just go to N and say “vehicle speed to high for R”, nothing bad happens. Put it back in D and keep on driving.
