This has to be the definitive version, since he wrote the song along with Oakley Haldeman . I’ve got a Christmas Classics playlist going on Spotify. Nothing but 40s to 70s. Lots of Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Andy Williams, Perry Como, etc. Great stuff.

Well, maybe just the one girl.
But yeah. I’m not against a cappella singing, and their arrangements aren’t terrible, but there’s just something processed about their sound (autotune?) that sounds artificial and too perfect. Not a fan.

The opening of Sleigh Ride is actually pretty treacherous for the trumpets. We used to throw a dollar bill on the stand at the beginning. Whoever got through it without missing a note got the cash.

Like I said the director is a brasshole. The third trumpet part could play stars and stripes forever instead and not get in trouble. The first chair could pass a fart for the horse whinny and not get called out. But if I an alto forgot the accidental rule or not swing one measure, it was the end of the world for him.

Band conductors, and all conductors, can be a rather insecure lot. Many of them are frustrated instrumentalists, and rise to the level of their own incompetence. I have worked with many fabulous conductors, and I have worked with more than a few who are tyrannical assholes.
But conductors have to remember who is really making the music here. As my teacher used to say, “The baton doesn’t make any noise at all, now isn’t that right?”
