The rodeo was awesome. It was really exciting, and requires amazing strength, skill, and athleticism. I liked the roping, and barrel racing was amazing. But there is a reason they close with bull riding. Holy shit, those guy are maniacs.
Merck’s box seats were amazing as well, with free food and drink.
I go home tomorrow. I have to fly to Phoenix, then Fresno, turning a 1 hour flight into a day of travel.

Can you gamble on the rodeo? Because I don’t know shit about rodeo but that would be amazing.

Good for you! I grew up in the country and even though I was never directly involved in the rodeo, it was always around. Most people who have no connections to it dismiss it without ever seeing one for themselves, so they have no idea what they are missing. Either that, or they chalk it all up to animal cruelty and dismiss it outright.
The time commitment for the cowboys and cowgirls is immense. A friend of my daughter’s is learning to rope and barrel race. She’s practicing nearly every day and during the season she spends almost every weekend on the road to attend a local or regional rodeo. The training isn’t just for her, it’s also for her horses. Yes, plural. A good roping horse may not make a good barrel racer, so if you want to be competitive in more than one event, you have to have more than one. It’s the same reason you have one car for the dirt oval and a completely different car for rock crawling.
While I like riding, we never had the money for our own horses and we certainly couldn’t afford to feed them, transport them, or spend the time in training or basic care. Even a basic trailer with a towing rig costs $100,000. The money our friends spend on hotels, food, and fuel would break our budget even today. I’m doing good to keep all of our cars on the road.
I’m glad you had a great time at the rodeo. If you ever have the chance, come to the Houston rodeo. It’s one of the biggest in the country and it lives up to the hype.
