repost for the daytime crowd: Sweat, Bruises and (possibly) Broken Toes. A great concert experience.

I went to see Say Anything perform at St Andrew’s Hall in Detroit last night.

Kinja'd!!!

It was a great show. I miss this sort of mosh pit experience. I don’t have a good explanation as to why it’s a great experience, but it is.

You’re in the middle of one big mass of people. you go from 10 ft from the stage to 5 ft from the stage without any notice , or any real action of your own. Bashed around, pushed around, pushing others, getting smushed by others. You’re all there for the entertainment, and the entertainment is there for you. You get your feet stepped on, you end up getting hit by some guy who crowdsurfs awkwardly. You apologize if you bump someone particularly hard, but they don’t care, they’re there for the same reasons you are.

Kinja'd!!!

I tried to get photos, but it didn’t matter, that was the guitarist crowdsurfing while still playing the guitar.

I miss this experience so much. I don’t need alcohol for it, I don’t need drugs, I need the joy of tons of people smashed together for the enjoyment of a band.

Kinja'd!!!

Have a sweet Bronco that was street-parked near the concert venue.

We saw Say Anything earlier this year in Philly, and it was a great show. Glad you enjoyed it.

As for the crowd, I absolutely understand the feeling that you’re describing, but now that I’m one of the Olds I usually prefer to keep out of the fray and let the youths have their fun. But I totally get it, when in that moment you don’t need booze or drugs or anything else in the world to have fun and it’s just pure enjoyment. I’m glad you were able to experience that again.

A lot of the bands I like don’t tour much anymore, so I don’t get to see that many shows like that anymore. Also, last year I went to a Jimmy Eat World concert and it was standing-room-only and for the whole time, everyone just stood there. any attempts at moshing were quelled immediately. It was the weirdest thing.

I spent a whole concert in a mosh pit for the first time in years last month. I was almost certainly the oldest person in the pit, but I am large and strong and spent enought time in mosh pits as a youth to know the drill, and so I escaped with only scrapes and bruises and sore muscles, as well as a mind cleared by catharsis and a giant grin on my face. And I was reminded how many small acts of kindness and community always occur in that weird environment despite the apparent violence, like the many hands that instantly pick up anyone who gets knocked down, the little apologies for too-hard shunts, and of course the shared joy.

You’re not wrong. I almost fell over , and was caught and righted. Later, I assisted that person with almost the exact same thing.

The crowd can have a huge impact on the experience. It kills the energy of the show if everyone just stands there. I’m lucky enough to have gone to a handful of shows this year with great crowds. Last week we saw LCD Soundsystem and it was like a nonstop dance party.

I discovered They Might Be Giants are performing at this venue in February. so that sounds like fun. Not mosh-pit kind of fun, but fun.

I’ve always hung back in the audience. I don’t like close personal contact, not least with a huge mass of people I don’t know.

I saw Say Anything a couple years ago, maybe 2013 or 14? Anyway, I enjoyed it but was underwhelmed. It just didn’t have the energy I thought it would, and I wasn’t as into Say Anything as I used to be. One of my buddy’s said that Max’s shows aren’t the same anymore now that he’s clean and has like, a family and stuff and is a happy person. So that’s great for him.

Mosh pits and the metal community as a whole must look so strange from the outside. You have a giant mass of people pushing each other around and being plenty violent yet if someone goes down or is hurt the people around them are there to help instantly.

At the Metallica concert I went to this summer a guy who was crowd surfing ~30 people back from the barricades fell and messed up his ankle. The people around him picked him back up, determined he was hurt, started a game of telephone to get the message to the security at the front of the stage, and began passing him to the front chain gang style. In total it took about 45 seconds from when he fell to when he was over the barricades getting help from the EMTs on hand. That stadium may have been full of ~60k total strangers but in a way we are family in our love of the music.

My first time actually seeing them in concert. I believe what you said, though. makes total sense. What I will say, is that they played the entirety of “...is a real boy” so that gave it a lot of nostalgia.

Oh man did they play alive with the glory of love? I’ve known that song like ten years but it’s the only song I know from the band.

Yes they did. It’s one of the few of theirs that I know by heart.

You’ve started something here. I’m listening to ...Is A Real Boy for the first time and I’m liking it and they’re playing 4 albums over 2 shows here in Melbourne early next year...
