And here TIMEX comes to save the day with a new Marlin. The self-winder of the 60's that started taking a licking and kept on ticking. At issue? Trying to find anything else that’s a manual wind mechanical watch. My sister would like one. And just a basic one at that. Nothing bling. Nothing expensive. So naturally what was super cheap and throw away in the past is now a new thing in demand. Timex sold out of the Marlin. Hipsters.....
Anyone got a good idea on an inexpensive manual wind women’s watch?
I’m SOL I know it.

why not an automatic? It keeps its time if you wear it but after you let it sit for a couple days you have to wind it to get it going again. has all the interesting mechanical bits. I have an invicta I have beat the crap out of for years it even has a crystal back to see all the fancy gears and springs and stuff.

At least your sister actually uses a watch for time. My much younger sister had me change the battery in her gem/crystal encrusted Micheal Kors “$500" china special, she said I didn’t have to set the time, she just “wears it for looks” *facepalm* I set it for her anyway and tried to explain why she shouldn’t do that.. or even tell anyone over 30 that.
Seiko’s entire line of manual watches tend to be a bit smallish, most of the inexpensive men’s automatics are small, but they make women’s versions as well. The 7S26 7S36 powered seiko automatics are a good balance of price/quality for long term ownership. Manual/autos can be clunky and junky when they get further below the $100 range though. I’ve bought a few chinese movement autos that have been ok, but never really feel safe to wind. The worst was probably a Vostok Amphibian (Russian obviously), love the watch, but I hate having to wind it or set it because it’s so inexpensive.

Fad? I wouldn’t say manual / automatic watches are a “fad”, just bringing back the way watches used to be made.

Have you tried looking on eBay or any other vintage watch place? I picked up an ‘81 Seiko automatic for $25, holds time for a few days before it needs to be adjusted, looks great. You can get some good deals on older watches.

Automatic watches have continued to be popular. People like mechanical watches. Bringing back manual wind feels like the fad.
In a way it actually kinda makes sense to bring back manual wind. An automatic watch is good for someone who wears it all the time but if someone buys a bunch of watches and changes between them, they need a goofy winder case to keep the autos wound up. Manual wind, just wind it up, no goofy winder needed.

Or you can just pick it up and shake it for a little bit. I have 2 and just let them wind down. Shake them as I walk around the house in the morning opening up windows and such before I set it and put it on, no big deal.
