Kinja'd!!!

Last night was a good night for me, because of politics and stuff. Come for the gifs, stay for the mild takes!

Of all the groups Roy Moore and his campaign managed to talk shit about, us Jews were spared until almost the end of the campaign. But last week, in response to a question about a whackadoo conspiracy theory about George Soros paying to register felons to vote in Alabama so they could vote for Doug Jones, Moore said this :

“He is pushing an agenda and his agenda is sexual in nature, his agenda is liberal, and not what Americans need. It’s not our American culture. Soros comes from another world that I don’t identify with. No matter how much money he’s got, he’s still going to the same place that people who don’t recognize God and morality and accept his salvation are going. And that’s not a good place.”

Some folks interpreted this as Roy Moore saying George Soros is going to hell because he’s Jewish. Who knows what he actually meant, but he let his wife speak this official response to the topic:

As a Jew who is not Roy Moore’s attorney, allow me to share with you, in gif form, my reaction to this statement.

I mean really, I can’t help but laugh at this. I ain’t even mad at you for this, Kayla Moore. You and your husband’s bible thumpy asses were on my shit list long before you said anything maybe-accidentally-anti-semitic.

So, of course, Roy Moore lost, which just warmed the cockles of my heart, and in my watching of various news things today, this video was brought to my attention.

I’m sure he does. He and many other conservative Christian bible thumpy politicians like to act like we’re in their club by saying “Judeo-Christian” a lot .

We’re not in their club.

As a lifelong resident of Alabama, I’m glad it’s over. It’s a wedge between me and most of my friends at church, because the “evangelicals” are willing to overlook all of Roy Moore’s pandering, lying, ignorance, racism, sexism, bigotry, and lack of compassion because they think Doug Jones is going to be standing on the street corner shooting babies. It’s hard to have peace with my fellow believers when they openly support a guy that abuses the name of God as means to his political end.

The official Senate Oath of Office page makes no mention of bibles, only the specific wording which must be spoken. So, probably yes?

Until I started accompanying my raised-Catholic (but also a hippie like me) wife to Christmas mass with her family, I never really understood why the hell assorted Christian types get so worked up over abortion. But when the central story your whole religion is based on is about a child being conceived, abortion messing with that process is threatening the very core of your beliefs. People do some pretty irrational shit when they see something as an existential threat to their religion. The fact that the Supreme Court decided the abortion issue back in 1973 doesn’t matter to them. Anything and everything that can be done by politicians to fight abortion is on the table.

He was very liberal on abortion and they hate that. Most of the Roy Moore campaign’s response after the creeper news was, “these are only allegations, and they were 30 years ago, and Doug Jones wants to kill babies.”

No, it’s abortion. It begins and ends with abortion. I guess I obscured that when trying to be clever about him “standing on the street corner shooting babies.” The phrase “killing babies” gets used a lot because it has such powerful imagery, despite the unclear scientific understanding of it.

The Democratic Party in Alabama has tried to shift the narrative to say that the ship has sailed on issues like abortion and gay marriage and it’s time to talk about income inequality, Medicare/Medicaid, job growth, and tax reform. But since, like you said, the Dems have to tone down the advertisement of their religious beliefs (Doug Jones is a Christian, too) to get the non-evangelical vote while the Republicans are doing what they do, the Dems’ message (Doug called them “kitchen-table issues”) goes unheard.

Honestly, I’ve never heard anyone make the anti-abortion argument in the context of the immaculate conception and what it means to the foundation of our religion. While I think the fact that Christ came into the world as a helpless baby is a very important part of the story, that doesn’t seem to be what people take issue on. What I hear people say is, “Life is precious” and “Life is sacred.”

What grinds my gears is that the same people that claim life is precious/sacred are the same people that want to fund “weapons, not food, not homes, not shoes, not need” (de la Rocha, 1996). It’s the same people that support the death penalty. It’s the same people that don’t GAF about refugees, immigrants, and police brutality. It’s the same people that don’t want to provide healthcare for anyone. How can you be “pro- life ” when you are opposed to any action that supports it? These people are really just pro-birth.

Well yeah, nobody makes the anti-abortion argument about the immaculate conception directly.

“Pro life” is a euphemism for “anti abortion.” Both sides of the abortion debate decided they had to be “pro-” something and neither of them wanted to use the word abortion, so we’ve got pro life and pro choice.

Abortion is a modern concept and the assorted versions of Christianity all decided to take a position on it. I’m not Christian and I’ve often been genuinely puzzled as to why conservative Christianity is soooooo against abortion.

So my take, as an outsider, when I got stuck going to Christmas mass, and the whole thing is about conception and birth. Abortion fucks with conception and birth. That conflict seems like a pretty good reason to be against abortion, even if it goes un-said.

The fact that the Supreme Court decided the abortion issue back in 1973 doesn’t matter to them.

I need to point out something here. The Supreme Court decision did not prove that abortion is right or good. That is not within their power. They only decided that it is protected under the Constitution. The Constitution also codified tacit support of slavery until the 13th Amendment and prohibition until the 21st, thus demonstrating that a moral issue is never truly considered “decided” just because the panel of justices say so, and that citizens need not simply accept it as fact because a legal decision has been rendered.

It’s unfathomable to me with the social progress I’ve seen in just 38 years on this planet that a guy with Moore’s viewpoints was able to get so far in that election. Granted, it wasn’t a national affair, but it’s had a microscope on it for a few months now. His viewpoints essentially parrot our current POTUS, but he lacked the ability to put them out with nuance/wordplay/double entendre to leave himself an acceptable out/explanation. Quite the contrary, he’d proudly own it.

The last 20 seconds of that campaign spokesman’s video were hilarious.

Somewhat unrelated, but the bit about going to hell immediately reminded me of this Rowan Atkinson bit (for a few reasons, given the context...). It’s a short watch, the payoff is around 2:20 or so...

Not being from the US this amazes me. I have no clue if my prime minister is religious and, if yes, to which religion he belongs to. He might be an atheist (probably), he might be a devout believer, I have no clue. And that’s the way it should be. All that matters are his actions and his reasoned opinions. Religion should be a private issue, it should be kept out of politics.

The hardest part of all of this for me has been that my dad (a retired pastor and one of the kindest, gentlest, most compassionate people you’d ever meet) is a Trump apologist... And yet the last 4 words are “so help me God”, implying the oath relies on a belief and fear of a single powerful deity. While I don’t think Moore’s spokesperson meant anything beyond what he said, that you swear on a bible, it’s not like the presence of a bible or not changes the anchor of the oath in monotheism.

Here is the full section of the US code that applies to the oath of office:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

An individual, except the President, elected or appointed to an office of honor or profit in the civil service or uniformed services, shall take the following oath: “I, AB, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.” This section does not affect other oaths required by law.

There are no specifications about what exactly “God” means in this context, i.e. which religion, or that the god has to be from a monotheistic religion, or that the person taking the oath has to be a member of any religion to qualify to take the oath. The only requirement is that a person being sworn in to Congress (and other positions covered by this code) speak the words of the oath.

Even if your monotheistic religion membership requirement were there, which, of course, it’s not, Islam is a monotheistic religion, and therefore it would satisfy your your imaginary monotheistic religion requirement.
