So You Want To Use Nitrous Oxide Without Blowing Up Your Engine

Nitrous oxide has a bad rap, and the reason it has a bad rap is the same reason it is so great: it’s easy. Too easy; for about $500 and a few hours of work, you can add basically any amount of power you want. If you are a reasonable person with self-control and a nitrous controller, you can add 35 horsepower to your Ford Mustang and be totally content. This is, of course, a fictional situation because nobody who drives a Mustang has that kind of self-control.

For 35 hp, Nitrous seems like a waste of time.

I was thinking the same. A kit, controller, and fill probably runs $1000 in total (for NX or equiv). Maybe worth it to just go purging on people.

Pretty good article though.

You can get 35 extra hp by simply adding NOS sticker somewhere on your car

It’s a pretty substantial increase on my 1400lb, motorcycle-powered-car.

If only Nitrous marketing was as effective as Turbo marketing...

Depends on the application. 35hp would be huge for me, and even if I splurged on the absolute best quality exhaust from the engine back with perfect flow paths, a custom intake, advanced the timing, etc. I’d be lucky to even see a 10hp boost. And that would cost more than $1000

Didn’t realize, I thought you were talking about 35hp to a Mustang. Sorry.

it is a “substantial” increase, but for all of the effort to get that small amount of a gain, why not go with a small turbo, or a small supercharger, cetrifugal, or screw, and have a power adder that doesnt run out? also nitrous is illegal to have connected while on the street.

i have gotten to ride with a few of my younger friends, while they were trying to decide exactly how much power a fox body mustang needed to have added to it. everything up to about 75 hp you ask “did YOU feel any difference?” you get to about 175hp adding in, and it feels like someone gave the the car a good kick.... you also have to have your traction sorted, so the car doesnt try to step out from underneath you when it kicks in.....

I’m not sure why you believe nitrous is illegal, but it is not in any state I’m familiar with, as long as you are still using factory emissions equipment.

As for other FI, nitrous is significantly (5-10x) cheaper upfront.

down here in Texas, its illegal to have the bottle hooked up on the street......

I always thought a sneaky Pete system would be fun to play with, 25-40hp completely hidden, I always thought it would be great to have for bracket racing.....bad launch no problem just use a little be more power to hit your dial-in time....with some risk of going too fast.....the other option was to dial in slow and just hit it but what’s the fun in that.

Do you have some sort of citation for that? There is no law I’ve seen that specifically indicates nitrous as illegal for street use.

The only thing I’ve seen applicable is regulating increased emissions, which would encompass all power gain equipment, including intake and exhaust changes.

I suppose so, I was thinking in terms of normal cars.

Heads and a cam would help more than an intake and exhaust would, at least on a stock engine. And for a lot of engines (maybe not “modern” ones) they’re under $1k for both. Even a coil upgrade on the 5.7 Hemi gets an 11hp gain. But that’s with something a little bigger than whatever I assume you’ve got.

the best that i can find , is citations about labeling for “for offroad use only” or “for rcing purposes only” for intakes and air cleaners. but i think that it would fairly well apply to a hooked up nitrous kit..... closest citation that i could find.....

Except it isn’t an air intake system, nitrous isn’t air, it’s an auxiliary oxidizer. It’s not very open to interpretation. Even more to the point, they are sighting CARB approval, and CARB has approved systems in the past, deeming them ‘not to reduce the effectiveness of emissions control devices.’

right, but it is a part that is labeled(the bottle of nitrous itself(see picture at the top of story)), stamped, tagged as “for racing use only”, which constitutes an “illegal modification”. it is basically the same thing as running circle track dirt tires on the street. yes they have enough tread, and yes they might be able to clear whatever load rating you are needing, but the fact that they are molded with “not for highway use/ or for competition use only” means that they will get you a fail at an inspection, or a fix it ticket if you are pulled over while running them.like those LED bars that have gotten so popular, yeah you can have them, and hooked up, but you cant use them on the highway, and if you do, its a ticket...... it is why that you can have the entire system present and installed, but cannot have the bottle hooked up......

I would never think twice about running a bottle on the street.

If you reach the point where a cop is looking in your trunk, you’ve probably got bigger problems.

yeah, i hear you on that one. i am not a guy to be worried about adding parts, or speed parts, or something that will give me an outright advantage. i do like to know if it will get me in trouble, so that i can distract from, and disguise accordingly.
