Back in high school a friend had a 1970 Honda QA50 minibike. Well the shift lever broke off and a new one was over $100. So we did what any high school kids with limited resources would do, we went to home depot and got a pair of vice grips. Attached it to the shifter and used that. I’ve been told the vice grips are still on there.

A school friend of mine’s mom had a minivan with a vice grip sliding door handle in her Aerostar for years.

I coworker of mine laid down his V-Strom on a dirt road on the way out to a bonfire a few years ago. Broke off the shift lever but other than that and some scrathes on the fuel tank it was fine. We stuck some vice grips on it. When he got home he drilled a hole in it and stuck a long 1/2” bolt through, secured it between two nuts and washers and rode it like that for 2 years before finally getting a new shifter.

I keep a small set of v-grips in my tool roll for just this purpose. Can also use it as a shift lever... Did that with a trike once in my youth.
