My wife and I no longer eat meat but still feed our cats meat. I don’t have a good way to resolve the ethics of whether it is truly acceptable for someone who does not eat meat to house and feed cute fuzzy little predators, but we love our fuzzy little predators so we feed them what they need to be fed. Cats and dogs are carnivores, not omnivores, and denying them meat is much worse for them than it is for us omnivore humans who choose to not eat meat on ethical grounds.

I’d also contend that forcing one’s dietary/religious beliefs on an animal that would follow another path in a natural setting is also inhumane. They can’t tell you it’s not what they want.

Just read this on wapo. No vet had been found to universally accept this. Maybe if dogs had an intestine for processing vegetables as well as humans I could get behind it.

My dog would probably starve if I tried to feed him a vegan diet. He got a taste of my cat’s wet food and is now on a partial hunger strike thinking I’m going to start feeding it to him.

dogs shouldn’t, but they can make use of some forms of vegetable nutrition. but they still need a large portion of protein in their diets, which should come from meat sources.
cats are obligate carnivores, because there are nutrients they can’t synthesize themselves and must get it from meat sources. Plus, they really need to eat a whole-animal (or nutritionally similar) diet because some of the nutrients they need come from their prey’s organs. and- yes- the contents of their guts.
those kinds of capital-V vegans irritate the hell out of me. It’s one thing if that’s how you want to live your life, but the ones who are constantly proselytizing and trying to force their carnivorous pets to be vegan too can take a flying leap.

Vegan diets for dogs are technically possible but very difficult to give them the proper nutrition. Same with the BARF diet.
Making cats go vegan will kill them. Cats need meat as a primary source of food (and water).

Honestly, dogs can thrive on a meatless diet. You just have to make sure they get enough protein and iron. However, I really can’t see that being done in a shelter. I would expect a diet of mostly corn-based kibbles there.
Now, cats, however, absolutely cannot live on a meatless diet. While dogs are omnivores, cats are well and true carnivores.
