I’m seriously considering picking up and learning either alto or tenor sax. Probably tenor, since then I could play B-flat trumpet pieces (albeit ottava bassa ) in church without needing to write my own transposition scores.

Kinja'd!!!

I still like the sound of most E-flat alto saxes though...

So it’s official. I’ve completely lost my marbles. A pianist/organist wanting to play alto and tenor sax.

[Adolphe] Sax faced many near-death experiences. Over the course of his childhood, he:

fell from a height of three floors, hit his head on a stone and could barely stand afterwards [which may explain quite a bit],

at the age of three, drank a bowl full of vitriolized water and later swallowed a pin,

burnt himself seriously in a gunpowder explosion,

fell onto a hot cast iron frying pan, burning his side,

survived poisoning and suffocation in his own bedroom where varnished items were kept during the night,

was hit on the head by a cobblestone, and

fell into a river and barely survived.

His mother once said that “he’s a child condemned to misfortune; he won’t live.” His neighbors called him “little Sax, the ghost” ( Wikipedia )

This list does not include the fact that he invented the saxophone.

Numerous saxophone jokes come to mind, along with a paraphrased quote from a college band director, of whom you may have heard so I won’t tell you his name, who recounted a story of Richard Wagner saying, “Here comes that awful man Sax with one of his dreadful instruments.”

Be that as it may (or may not), I say go for it and have fun.

The blessing of the saxophone is that you are 90% of the sound the instrument makes.

The curse of the saxophone is that you are 90% of the sound the instrument makes.

It’s only crazy if you plan to play both at the same time.

My wife won’t let me play her saxophone any more. She says I’m just too loud. Since neither of my kids wanted to play after two years of band apiece, that poor little alto is hibernating in the closet once again.

If I were going to spend money on one for myself, I’d go back to playing a Bari-sax. Oh those low, low tones....

If you’re set on E-flat go with a Bari. Bari sax is best sax.

B-flat saxes would fit a bit better since most parts that I’d be asked to play would basically be “Play this B-Flat trumpet line an octave lower”, so that’s B-Flat tenor sax.

But it would not surprise me if I ended up playing bari.

Oh yeah that’s some reading fail on my part. Yeah, the tenor is a great all-rounder, and to my ear they seem to be easier to get a really nice sound out of.

Of all the wind instruments, saxophone is the easiest to pick up. Sax pretty much designed it that way; it’s the benefit of being the first woodwind that was actually literally INVENTED rather than accidentally discovered and then developed over the course of several centuries.

Whatever you do, don’t buy a cheap Chinese beater. You’ll get more mileage out of your cash by using it as toilet paper. Buy a decent, used axe of reputable quality. Pawn shops can turn into delightful treasure hunts, if you have a knowledgeable saxophonist helping you shop.

My son plays tenor - we should have guided him to the alto. The alto just seems to do more in a useable range.

Nice! I’ve been looking into getting a sax as well, also probably a tenor. I’ve been a clarinet player for life but grew up wanting to play tenor sax like most of the jazz guys I listened to. My wife used to play Bari sax and has been saying she’d like to pick up again so I think we might both meet in the middle with a Tenor.

I read off either Bb trumpet or tenor sax scores for years on clarinet so most of the sheet music I have is already right for it

I was going to go the standard route of buying a used Yammy (e.g. YTS-23) to start with.

I mean, my first upright piano (when I was 9) was a Yammy, and I have a Yamaha P45B digital now (since I no longer have an acoustic piano...and I want one of those too...)

Yeah, almost all the orchestral transposing instruments are in concert B. This is my reasoning for going to a tenor sax, since there are a ton of organ-trumpet duets and piano-trumpet duets (they all have B-Flat trumpet parts) that I could do with the boyfriend (provided my sax playing gets decent enough).

Professional saxophonist here. I highly recommend picking up the Yamaha student model tenor saxophone.

That was the plan. I mean, you can’t really go wrong with a Yamaha when you are learning (Same with their acoustic pianos).
