I initially leaned towards Moore, but wound up abstaining after Trump endorsed Moore (birds of a feather) and the scandal got wider, but honestly Doug Jones will be a solid senator and is widely supported by a lot of my friends — most of whom are “evangelicals” in their 30s and 40s. I’ve never seen a Democratic candidate here get so much support from so many diverse areas. We’re all pretty sick of the GOP and Trump in particular.

TL;DR: Doug Jones, a Democrat, won the vacant Alabama Senate seat over Roy Moore, a Republican. The fact that this happened in Alabama, one of the most red states in the country, bodes well for a massive blue wave in the 2018 House and Senate elections and should have the GOP shitting bricks.

This is round 3 of a special election to fill Jeff Sessions’ seat since he became AG almost a year ago. It’s been 6 months of drama.

In the past month, this is basically what happened:
- A trans woman solidly beat a guy who basically stopped short of saying he wanted to kill LGBTQ people. More trans people ended up in office too.
- Trump’s trans ban was defeated in court for a third time.
- Lots of Democrats took seats in November.
- Our President incriminates himself, attacks a sexual assault victim, pisses off the FBI, and posts fascist propaganda.
- A Presidentially-endorsed and GOP-backed pedophile narrowly loses to a Democrat in one of the deepest red states ever.
Wow, I know the DNC doesn’t have any message right now (aside from “at least we aren’t sexually assaulting children”) but this gives me hopes for 2018.

Takeaway here is that this election was a nearly 30-point swing compared to previous Senate races, which in terms of election results is unprecendented, especially considering that Trump won Alabama by +28 a year ago and endorsed Moore, which normally increases a candidate’s popularity. That drastic swing isn’t completely explained by the pedophilia accusations so there were a ton more Democratics turning out than in previous elections

Not really no. Never really touch news channels like Fox or CNN. I still usually hear about current events from reddit/imgur posts or people talking about it, and then I usually look into further if it interests me. Tbh I’m surprised I didn’t know about this election until now.

He was tacitly the “man of good character” (until he wasn’t). But even though I didn’t like some of his poor packaging of his opinionated comments, I felt like he was a good GOP disruptor — and Trump hated him and supported his opponent in the primaries. He’s been something of a celebrity politician here for almost 20 years, long before he started becoming everyday news. I dislike Trump as much as any politician ever, so that antagonism no doubt clouded my judgment a bit. And, of course, the constant evolution of the underage girl scandal.
