Kinja'd!!!

I really liked infiniti’s cars because they tended to be cheaper than BMWs or Audis and had similar features and power.

I know infiniti’s have worse interiors, and many of their technologies aren’t quite proven, like the disconnecting power steering. But, perhaps being a millennial car person, I like it.

I was just eyeing these cars, I did not expect that these would be priced so expensive, almost 30,000 pesos more expensive than the equivalent “40i” badged bmws (the audi S5 is more expensive though) I get it, they have about 70HP more than the BMWs. But what infiniti needs to understand is that BMW owners don’t cross shop Infintis.

So, 400 HP

RWD

Electronically disconnecting steering

“Digital suspension” whatever that is...

And a very stupid dual screen interior...

I like how they look.

The 7 speed auto is not nearly as good as the other more modern transmissions in the segment like the ZF 8 speed, and there’s no manual option.

Direct Adaptive Steering is the steer-by-wire gimmick. It’s supposed to kind of suck. In the US it’s part of a package with the active cruise control, and other active safety gimmicks. I like active cruise but I would probably skip it to avoid the steering.

I think its a step into the future of car design!

You see, having a large tube running from the compartment into the wheels has a lot of complications!

I’d like to see a completely detached steering wheel that has a computer that can emulate hydraulic steering in its natural response and also be able to emulate road feel when the driver wants it.

Do I want road feel in a crowded street after being at work 7 hours? NO!

Do I want it on the highway? Yes!

That’s all well and good in theory but according to reviews, the execution is less than perfect.

There are mechanical steering setups with adjustable feel and many of them are more successful than the Infiniti steer-by-wire.

Also if you squint hard you can see how it’s still the G37.

Yes! Its a shame that its not working nicely!

Is this a bad thing?

Not bad, just pointing out that it’s not exactly a clean sheet design.

What I can hear all over the internet is that this company doesn’t know what to do... should it be a BMW competitor or a Mercedes competitor? As long as they don’t figure their shit out and decide if they want to make a GT car wth 400 horsepower or a 400 horsepower sports coupe, well... they are doomed I suppose? I find it laughable that they charge 30,000 pesos more for the Q60 RS than BMW charges for the 440i coupe... BMW is still the brand to go for a luxury coupe!

Meh. Infiniti as a whole is completely lacking brand identity, which is fine for a budget compact brand, but a terrible place to be for an aspiring luxury line. They’re no more sporty than the average car in their class, as you mentioned the interiors aren’t noteworthy, prices have gone up, and in ditching manuals they’ve lost a small but vocal segment of buyers.

Nissan is in a similar position, with their mainstream offerings all being significantly behind the competition in just about every meaningful way. The difference with Nissan though, is that the Z exists and still looks cool enough to be aspirational to young drivers, and the Gtr—while getting pretty dang old—remains a halo car that keeps Nissan from falling completely down into “meh” territory.

Infiniti no longer has anything to offer enthusiasts which means it has to make do with its mainstream offerings, which are decidedly boring. Maybe things will change

Well, I mean, it is a boring brand, but dammit do they sell cars! I think that a few years ago they overtook VW as top selling brand here in Mexico and everyone lost their fucking minds!

The main thing that strikes me about the Q60 is how much more appealing the Red Sport is over the rest of the range. A 328i or A4 2.0T I find very acceptable, and the 340i and S4 are great steps up. For Infiniti I find myself wanting absolutely nothing to do with even the 3.0t “Sport”. They just seem awful. The Red Sport, however, I am actually tempted by.

In Northern California, S4s and 340s are damn near everywhere. Red Sports... legitimately rare. I see more Giulia Quadrifoglios. In all, I just don’t think they have the cachet to put up a fair fight, much like Cadillac. Their all-around product needs to be stellar and clearly superior to the competition in order to shift the tide. They can’t be phoning it in like Nissan.

Had a G35 and really liked Infinity, but a neighbor has a Q60 and I mistook it for an Altima coupe. That ended any interest in getting another.
