Started my new job yesterday as general counsel for a client — no more billing by the hour for me! The company Christmas party is in Clearwater, Fl, so we’re staying in a beachfront resort. The biggest issue is that I am now working from home, which is a huge change for me as I have never worked well from home due to all the distractions (kids, dogs, wife, tv, cars). But I spent the weekend setting up my home office, actually got almost everything up and running, and am trying to adapt. Also, I’m actually going to miss having an excuse to drive. Anyone have any tips for working at home?

My wife works from home and the biggest thing is staying in a routine. Get up at the same time everyday, get ready for the day, change into something different (don’t just wear pajamas all day), and set boundaries if you live with anyone else (i.e. I work from x to y don’t bother me during this time)

Getting dressed is a big boost for actually getting things done.

Oh wow, I didn’t know about this.

Don’t mix work and home office chores. Try to keep your job as separate in your mind and routine as possible. Otherwise you run the danger of either getting distracted from your work or getting depressed because you can’t get away from it, or both.
