Marino Franchitti tells you all about it. I’ll not try to paraphrase that here, but what we need to take away from this is what pure enjoyment really is. What it means, and what today’s “sports” cars mostly lack.

Driving feel. Can the driver easily make the car do anything he/she wants? Does the car talk to the driver? Does the driver talk to the car? Has today’s sports car lost something? Because a Corvette with 500hp claimed as a “slow car” is either total bullshit, or cars are so over performanced that a human being no longer has that two-way conversation with their car.

(Another thing, about Kinja. Now I have to reset the time on the post before I publish or it sticks it way back in line to when I started writing this thing and not when I click publish. Dammit.)

There are very few sports cars left. There are a lot of fast cars, and a lot of highly versatile cars but very few sports cars.

Well that’s why I only want an older sports car, maybe some smaller cars today can be fun but nothing is like the classics with the feel and the smells and the fear of death.

I’m not the biggest Petrolicious fan but that aside, yeah its really too bad that as time goes on we lose more of the things that make cars cool. Dramatic designs, inefficient motors that sound amazing, lightweight construction, etc.

Because of those words, you now have a free pass for later through St. Peter’s gates.

That’s why my project car is a ‘71 GMC van. You have to actually operate it.

I hope your holidays are ramping up nicely.

I haven’t watched the video and I already like everything about this car.

A young man called me yesterday morning and asked for my permission to marry my daughter. Two of my three daughters will be at home with their men this year. My family is advancing.

This is why Miata is always the answer (or Integra/Civic if you need some practicality)

congratulations? Im not sure how that is supposed to go as a father yet. I’ve many years to go. I proposed to my wife at her parents house on Christmas eve though. a good time of year since people are already gathering to celebrate, you can just pretend its for you!

They have some very significant things in common, including the process by which they decided they were right for each other. I’m in kind of a weird place emotionally about it. It’s all good, but it’s also a very big deal, and the magnitude is still setting in. For example, this Christmas will be the last time she is at home as our daughter and not as a wife. And then, some year, there will be little crumb grabbers who call me Pop Pop and I think that will be wonderful.

The bad news is, there are fewer impractical 2-seater sports cars than there were 25 years ago.

The good news is, sports sedans and hot hatches of today are vastly superior in power and handling than those old sports cars. The bar for “pure sports car” is much, much higher than 25 years ago when cars weighed 2500 lbs and required less suspension and tire to be “fun.”

Modern sports cars are all bad. Every single one. The point of a sports car is to be connected to your surroundings and to your machine. You can’t do that in a heavyweight car with an automatic, sound deadening, ABS, acoustic glass, and poor visibility. Nothing at all touches old sports cars for driving joy and connectedness.
