What is your MPG vs. Engine Size?

Kinja'd!!!

The EJ is a dinosaur but that’s part of its appeal. At around 18 MPG average it’s barely more efficient than the 4200 LB, 4.1 liter V8 powered car I used to drive. The interesting piece is that both motors make 265 horsepower, but in different ways. The 900 LB difference and the engine design are the variables. Gearing too. If the STI didn’t exist the WRX would surely have a 6th gear, but since it doesn’t you’re doing 3k RPM on the highway, bare minimum.

We hear a lot about power density in terms of horsepower per liter, but what about some kind of engine displacement vs. MPG comparison? Just for fun really, its not like you could factor in gearing, weight, or what the engine was designed to do, though those are definitely worth noting. I propose just dividing combined MPG by displacement: 18/2.5 = 7.2

What would that 7.2 mean though? I guess you could conceptualize it as the amount in MPG each liter of your engine is contributing to your overall MPG rating. For example, a new GTI gets 30 combined, so each liter of its 2.0 turbo motor is contributing 15 MPG to the overall rating. Conversely, If you’re getting 7 MPG from a 7 liter big block, that’s a 1. So it looks like the range of numbers would be from 5 - 20ish.

Bad. I’m not sure what my combined is now. I recently installed run-flat snow tires and my last tank of city driving was just under 15.

15/2.5=6

Yeah, the city mileage is pretty atrocious. Likely due to getting 4,000 pounds moving. Highway mileage is surprisingly good. I usually get 25 or better.

I do a lot of highway miles though.

52 / 1.8 = 28.9

However, that’s an awkward measurement, simply because it gets really ugly, really fast, on the extremes. So, I’ll use gallons per 100 miles per liter instead (To calculate that, just do 100 / MPG.)

1.92 / 1.8 = 1.07.

I feel like that formula works better overall.

For instance, with a Corvette, it’s rated at 5.3 gal/100 mi, has a 6.2 liter engine, for a score of .854, meaning that on specific efficiency, a Corvette actually beats my Prius. (Of course, specific efficiency is not actually useful, but...)

not great, but a 6th gear would definitely help

New WRXs have a 6th gear.

You can play with tuning the AVCS advance and timing in the 2000-3000rpm range while your MAF is under 1/gs. People have gotten legacy GTs with an EJ255 to 30mpg highway and 19-22mph city. Also around town, alot of the lost on short trips is just warming up the cats....not much to do about that.

Toyota GT86: small, light, slippery, and the stock tires are low-resistance types. And even though people diss the engine, the trick dual mode injection system is pretty darn efficient as well as delivering 100 NA hp/litre. It’s actually a much better commuter than I’d expected.

41 MPG highway according to the EPA. It’s funny, I hypermiled a 2015 civic a few months ago, it managed 45 which seems a lot less impressive now.

Yes, nobody I mention it to at the track can believe it, especially after I’ve been climbing all over their asses. They’re all “no way, that’s BS!” and I’m “look: 2012 date code!”

Rears are starting to get a little thin though :-)

My recently-acquired 2012 Joop GC, V6, 2wd:

22 mpg / 3.6 liters = 6.111

Of course, I’m averaging the gas mileage over a week or so. I got it up to 26 mpg (and still climbing) on a trip to New Orleans. So my daily commute of 70 highway miles round-trip probably puts me up around 24 mpg five days out of the week, but running errands on the weekends, waiting at stoplights, etc. pulls the average down around 18 or 19. So I figure 22 is a fair overall average.

BUT, I got about the same gas mileage in my Patriot, with a 2.4l:

22 mpg / 2.4 liters = 9.167

So I’m not sure the resulting numbers mean much.

26 is really impressive for that motor and the car its in too, I don’t think I can manage that thanks to gearing. I’ll have to try resetting the odo on the highway.

If I’d actually get out of the house at a decent hour and not have to push it on my commute, I’d be around 27-28mpg. I once did 32.7 driving from the MD/PA line north of baltimore to west VA(around 100 miles)
