I left the house this morning thinking how ballsy I was, driving an FR-S in some blowing and falling snow, as my neighbors white knuckle their CR-Vs and Foresters on the morning commute. Then I pull onto the main road behind this guy.

Kinja'd!!!

An SL500 right out of the 90s, fighting for traction the whole way.

A pleasant reminder of how large the safety net has grown.

Side note: The text editing in mobile kinja has gone full bonkers again.

On the right tires the Toyobarus are surprisingly capable snow cars. The stock tires are death traps in wintery conditions though.

I’ve found it really needs weight in the back. Even with studs, it doesn’t fig in well, and gets pushed too easily by ruts.

Right now I’ve got about 80 pounds in the trunk, but I think I’ll be adding at least 80 more.

When I was in high school I navigated a ‘72 Torino through winters. Not so much courage as teen stupidity and a burning desire to avoid the school bus.

I drove my W210 E55 AMG, on all season low profile tires, in the snow several times. It was surprisingly capable.

I grew up driving either the ‘72 C10 (rwd) or various Grand Marquis/Crown Vics on all seasons through northern NY winters. Not ideal, but not terrible. We would throw some weight in the back of both.

More recently, I drove my RX8 through winters with snow tires on it, and it was rather capable. The limiting factor there was ground clearance for deep snow.

I think an SL500 is a perfectly reasonable car to drive in the snow.

What tires are you running? My dad had zero issues with Hakkapeliitta 8s on his.

I found the RX-8 tried to kill me at every corner when the road became even just a bit wet. Loved it
Was more predictable with 245s on it

From 2013-16 I had studless Hakks. This year I moved to studded Firestone Winterforce to see if the studs improved things (I slid plenty on the Hakks). I guess I’m looking for a magic bullet.

In the winter of 2009/10 I worked at the Killington ski resort as a photographer (it was a terrible job and paid bupkis), I took many pictures with my then-state-of-the-art 5MP Samsung camera phone, but I have been unable to find it again and I may have formatted over the microSD (which was still widely referred to as Transflash) card it was on... I somehow never took a picture with my work camera, a 24mp Sony a900... But about every other weekend a Ferrari 360 with New Jersey plates and a ski-rack would show up in the parking lot. Even on stormy weekends it would show up. It was NOT wearing snow tires. It was an “F1" with the first-gen automated manual. You know, the jerky, sudden one.

I never managed to meet or see the driver (knowingly, though we probably crossed paths on the mountain...) But I came to think of him/her as “Death-wish Dude”

How far up the access road?!?

I made a delivery to the Ram’s Head Lodge once, and pulled up behind a vette in the loading/unloading. It was a bad day, I have no idea how he made it there.

Snowshed parking lot. Not all the way to K-1, but still very impressive.

I drive my E55 in the snow and up to the mountain in winter quite a bit. It’s good fun.
