Kinja'd!!!

Buffer image, the M3 at work; appropriate, because I drove it to work today.

That provides an excellent segue into my first problem. I drove the M3 to work today because I’m headed to the dealer today to get my airbag recall taken care of. I leave my work ID in the 3 because I usually don’t take the M3 to work. I’ve to DD the M3, but adding 80 miles everyday to a M car isn’t exactly cheap. To park, we have to swipe our badge, and just as I go to pull into the plant, I realized I forgot my fucking badge back at home in my 3. So I had to go to security to get temporary badge, which doesn’t have access to anywhere in the plant, yay. On top of that, my office keys are on my badge, so I had to wait 30 minutes for one of the guys I share an office with to get here to open my door. Great way to start my morning.

Work has also been shitty recently. I’m not satisfied with my job at all, which is why I’m job searching. I forgot how much fun that was. I also forgot how much of a waiting game it was. I got a call yesterday, December 11, about a job I applied for back on October 27. At least this time, I’m actually earning some money as opposed to last year when I was on a fixed income of $0/month. I could bitch about my current pay, but I think it’s best to say I’m not being compensated correctly. That said, this search isn’t about just the money. It’s a factor, but not the main one. If it was only about it, I would have been headed back to the oilfield. I realized it wasn’t about the money when I wasn’t even thinking about what car I would buy if I went back. I was thinking about how bad my quality of life was and how shitty my social life was. I am going to ask for more, not oil money, but to be compensated like a chemical engineer with 5 years experience.

The good news is that I have an interview on Friday, but seeing as I’ve used all my vacation, looks like I’ll be calling in sick. It’s also a lot harder to interview when you have a full time job. So, looks like I’ve got a couple of prospects, both would mean that I would have to move, but I’m not attached to this area. Plus, I’ve moved every year since 2008, my first year of college, so I figured I might as well keep the tradition going for a decade.

Regardless, looks like there’s going to be some changes coming soon, probably for the best.

I feel your pain and relate to the struggle. On a work PC so I’m not going to say much, but the struggle is real. Hope better things are on the horizon for you.

Here’s my S5 parked next to another S5 at work today, since I drove it to work today, because S5.

I’ll ask my kid’s 8-ball if you’ll get the job...

What do they know anyway.

I do that with my card too. My solution was to get a spare card that I keep in my wallet so I can’t forget it. I can do that though because the asst security chief is cool and a car nut and security isn’t such a huge issue where I work.

Your M3 is probably more exciting, but the S5 is a perfect daily. V8/manual/AWD is pretty orgasmic.

I’ve got a LS400. But yes, S5 is one of those “maybes”, but I’ve gotten into the Evora recently and its a fair opponent in my mind.

Best of luck man! I’m in the fortunate position to like my job and even more so like the company I work for. I’ve been with the same company since college (~7 years), which is rare for people these days, your case being case in point. I could make more money, I could make big moves. But I’m happy. I contribute generously to a 401k, I am buying a house and I have a car. I am living very comfortably, so that’s what is important. My point with all this is, you are right, money isn’t everything and it’s a big sign for us car guys if we aren’t equating our next job to what car(parts) we’d be able to buy, haha. Find happiness my friend!

I had a phone interview for an oil company in colorado this time last year, would probably have gotten an S5 if I had gotten that job.

I too forgot my badge this morning. I got to do a wicked U-Turn on cold tires in my E92 M3. It was the highlight of my day so far.

Where ya planning to move this time? Come to Tampa. We need more M3s!

They won’t give me a second card, wish I could do that.

My car has been spinning the tires if I get on it too hard.

I’m looking at ATL or Greenville SC, or Houston or OKC if I could get back into oil.

I’m rooting for you, man. Sounds like you need a change. I’m sort of in the same boat. I’m looking for a career change and it’s tough. I just keep applying and I get maybe an email with some questions or a phone call and then it just goes silent. It’s very depressing.

Where are you looking to move to? Or is that just anywhere that will hire?

It said, “oil is not as bad as you remember it”, which is really hard to fit on one of those triangles. Like I said, no one pays attention to those things.

I understand that, my job search got me really down this time last year. Something will come along, it was a lot like that for me as well.

I’m being a lot more selective this time around, I have a job, no sense in taking something just cause it’s different. Looking at ATL or Greenville SC, maybe Houston or OKC if I can get back into oil.

God I love the old LS400. Once the S5 gets too old to daily I’d like to scoop up a cheap LS460. Evora and S5 probably drive completely different. The S5 is a big car.

Yeah. I keep telling myself that and for the most part it helps me keep moving forward.

That’s a good way of looking at it. Now that you have something in the meantime you’re better off waiting for what you want. If you want to do oil have you considered the other side? In the Bay Area we have a lot of biotech companies trying to do biodiesel and they’re always looking for chemical engineers.

Mines a ‘98 with 315,000 miles and still very wonderful. My goal is just something that is newer, more fun, and more tech. I drove the Lane;s Evora S and absolutely fell in love. I’ve been thinking IS-F, WRX, or 228i but we’ll have to see. It all depends on my job and pay situation.

It took me 10 months to get a job offer. That was rough. It can take a while, but there is an end eventually.

I have thought about the other side, hard to get in though because I don’t have any experience with any downstream stuff. I’m also not trying to live in California, living costs, etc.

Maybe it’s right. I had a phone interview for a frac engineer job for a production company in Colorado. The phone interview went really well, like it ended with them saying I was what they were looking for. However, I guess me being in GA was a determent to me getting further along in the process. I was pretty disappointed, that was basically the only job I applied to that I really wanted. Well, as luck would have it, they posted the same job two days ago and I applied. I’m really hoping they talk to me again because I still want the job. I always wanted to work for a production company and this could be the ticket.

Houston is awful, but once you are there...you are set. I will be there this weekend to see my buddy who’s working for Exxon. It is an awful town

Atlanta has Dragoncon yearly which is fucking awesome.

Never visited OKC.

I say pursue that job aggressively.

Look, it comes down to this: your happiness ultimately comes from inside you. We’re professionals, so we need to find our jobs some flavor of rewarding. BUT, too many of us think the job will give us happiness, if we can only find the right one. That’s not how it works. One of my former mentors is a huge professional success, world famous researcher, buckets of money, member of the National Academy of Sciences before 60. By all worldly measures a runaway success. But he can’t seem to hold down a relationship and has one marriage on the score card that lasted less than two years. I wouldn’t trade my life with him for anything.

What I’m saying is take a job that you like well enough and pays well enough to give you the room you need. Then, go out and do some things with your time like joining a church (if you’re a religious person), volunteer at a soup kitchen, join a local choir (if you’re musically inclined), take up a sport, whatever. Decide to be happy, and you’ll find yourself surrounded by happy people who want to spend time with you.

This has been your daily fortune cookie moment with Chariotoflove. Please come again.

I like Houston, been there several times, plus I’ve got a lot of friends there.

Even thought I went to Georgia Tech, not interested in Dragoncon at all.

Heard good things about OKC, and they’ve got a lot of oil companies there.

While the job may not bring happiness, it can bring the opposite, which is what my experience has been. Which makes me a miserable person and then not fun to be around. I had gotten really close to a girl at my old job but my negativity pushed her away. I’m trying to find a job I enjoy and want to come to work everyday, or at least tolerate. I find it hard to be positive when a job drags me down.

I’ve been told all these things before and am trying to figure out how to get out and do things. Living an hour from work doesn’t really help. I also make a lot of excuses. However, when I do try and get no where, I get really discouraged and stop trying, that’s what has happened here. I’m looking at Greenville SC and ATL because I already have friends there and would already have a better social life.

I hear you because I’ve been in an unhappy job situation before.

I’ll stop telling you things you’ve heard before. One thing I will share, though. If it’s hard to get up for doing things, you might consider talking to your doctor about antidepressant therapy. It helped my outlook on life. That’s it, no more Dear Abby from me, I promise.

Tone is hard to convey, it’s more ive heard the same thing from the different people so I should probably listen.

I have thought about those, I’m just worried about some of the side effects. Although I probably make the leap considering how much I drink at times. I do appreciate the encouragement though.
