My grandparents need a new car with better fuel mileage than their current DD. That, and they don’t particularly feel too safe in their current car anymore, but I just might take it off their hands. Here’s some factory specs:

Kinja'd!!!

They got it fully loaded. With some extra goodies as well. But it has some audible problems and a power steering fluid leak. The noises, I think, are from a hole in the muffler and also a grinding transmission, which is reportedly common amongst these models. They don’t want the “headache”of repairs and thought it was time for a change anyways so they decided— to keep it. Yup. And get a new car at the same time. So now what, it’s gonna sit there and take up space? And that’s where I come in. I’m considering adding this to my fleet and doing the repairs myself. After all, I do need to learn, what better way then to have something I can actually work on? My CR-V is too darn reliable so there’s nothing to do there until I get more stuff for my Type-R swap on it. This has some actual problems that are considered somewhat easy to fix according to the wrenching community so why not? But, seeing as I’m a 14, it might not be a good idea. Thoughts? I’m willing to learn: let me just say that much. I’ll update with pics when they get back way later.

EDIT: here’s a list of the problems, straight up.

•transmission grinding/rough shifts

•power steering leak

•navigation/infotainment screen doesn’t work, also controls A/C

•rear lights are just plain fucked up

•rumbling fart can/tractor/diesel bus-like noise, possibly from rust/hole in muffler

•(connected with the navi and taillights) electrical gremlins, most likely due to him NEVER CHANGING THE DAMN BATTERY!!!

•engine sounds like it’s about to cut off when in reverse

•idles straight up weirdly

•other stuff I haven’t inspected/diagnosed yet

Because of the transmission grinding and hole in the muffler and the other fun noises it makes. That, and yeah... they’re kinda loony

From the thumbnails, I was like “He’s getting a Pilot.”

Then I clicked to see how right I was :P

They’re good cars, just don’t expect CR-V levels of simpilicity. Watch that tranny! Multiple drains and fills every 30k or so, but only if it’s been done regularly in the past. If it’s untouched for 100k+ miles, then most people say to leave it alone.

Edit: I misread (hooray, mobile compression), thought they were looking at an MDX. I’ve never heard of anyone saying they didn’t feel safe in one, or that the economy was terrible.

They also said they’re tired if having to do repairs and shit so they’re probably gonna pawn it off on me, knowing I’m the car guy of the family. Also, they commute kinda far so an HR-V or Civic would be better suited for them, they don’t really need a big SUV like they did before.

Gotcha — when I hear “grandparents” I usually assume “retired with no commute.”

FWIW, a CR-V would probably be great for them. That seems to be the go-to retiree car around me since it does just about everything well. I still don’t know what to think about HR-V. Might feel like a penalty box after an MDX.

Full disclosure: I dislike Hondas with a passion after buying a 2015 Odyssey. But I know most people love them so I’m trying to be fair.

That particular J series in the MDX got a forged crank

They said they’re not trying to spend too much money on their next car, and just want a simple workhorse. I configured a 2017 HR-V LX 2WD CVT for then and only added mudguards and fog lights, nothing else. That’s all they say they really need, and they’re gonna have one hell of a time getting in and out of a Civic or Fit. After building it only came out to $20k, which is their budget yes after destination, handling, etc.

And also, sorry to hear you had a bad experience with Honda. My family had DaimlerChrysler and Chrysler Corporation products and that scarred them, except for the Stratus for some reason. Honda since 2013, a CR-V and an Odyssey and they’re good. Only other FCA car we had was the Grand Cherokee but something’s going on with it. We might just sell it and just make do with our 2 cars, it’s not like my dad drives much anyways. (Health issues)

I had a 2006 prior to the 2009 I have now. It was a great vehicle, and the reason I bought another one. Between the 2 of them, the only issues I’ve ever had was one oil pressure sensor, and one power steering o-ring. A combined 10 years of daily driver duties, and I’ve spent a total of $30 on repairs.

It’s kind of weird. My grandpa was way on top of maintenance with it until 2 years ago, but even still he’d take it in every few months or so. Oh, and I think it may be worth noting that it has like 175k miles on it. And was driven every day for quite a few miles in Chicago during every season, including winter. So.... yeah lol

That explains the exhaust. I guess the question is, is it worth putting a transmission in?

You’re probably looking at a year of wrenching and $2500-$3500 of parts. What will the car be worth after that? What will your purchase price be? Wrenching projects are fun, but losing a bunch of money isn’t.

Also, do you have the time and space to work on it? Can you leave it sitting in your wrenching spot for a couple of days while you’re in the middle of a big repair?

It sounds like the transmission is big issue. Hopefully topping off the fluids is the fix.

The transmission was a factory issue and they issued a minor recall for this model year. So that should be covered.

Understood. I was tacking on to the point E92M3 made so I replied to him.

Remember, I haven’t entirely scoped it out yet. I have yet to see what the problems really are, these are just guesses of what’s wrong. Some are certain from just looking at it though.

IIRC the recall was just a software update to help with a shudder changing gears.

If it has a mechanical problem I don’t think that will be covered. Especially if they never did the software recall in a timely manner.

I’m gonna take it for a drive today and see if I feel it. Then I’ll inspect the engine bay, underbody, fuse box and all that good stuff and see just what the hell is wrong with it. I truly hope there’s no transmission grinding and that it’s something else not as bad, or else screw it. I ain’t got the money for a new tranny.
