Toooooo Theeee CRAIGSLIST! 1100 bucks for a “sport bike” made in the century? Where do I sign. Honestly this is the perfect bike for me. I’m perfectly happy never hitting over 50 on two wheels, and I have a 1 mile commute, I have an 80cc moped, but I like the idea of “a bit more power”

I might get bashed for this, but when I was a teenager I was gifted a Yamaha YSR 80 and it was the most fun I’ve had on a bike. Low displacement sport bikes are a blast.

Awesome handling, not enough power to kill yourself. Sounds good me.

For another $1100 you can get one 11 years (and a generation) newer. Worth it?

Idk, I suspect the part for the newer one would be more expensive. And in my eyes the older in is better looking.

Parts might be more expensive, but will also be easier to find. And considering that it’s 11 years newer with 4,000 fewer miles (10k is a lot for a bike that’s not a Goldwing) it should be more reliable as well.

Also consider that the newer one has more power, better brakes, better suspension, better tires and is overall safer to learn on than the older bike, and it starts to look more appealing. Of course, for a few hundred more you can get one with ABS and fuel injection, too...

Fuel injection seems like cheating. To me it seems like learning to rebuild and tune carburetors is part of learning to ride a motorcycle. But I also have always wanted a air cooled Japanese bike from the 70s like my dad rode when he was young. So that idea is just part of my desire to have something older than me.

Tuning carbs does not teach you how to ride. Having a finicky bike that only runs sometimes, and often poorly, is actually actively keeping you from learning how to ride. You don’t look for carbs in cars, why would you want them on a bike?

Kinja'd!!!

This is a 2017 Honda CB1100. It’s reliable, has triple disc brakes with ABS, modern suspension and a fuel injected, air cooled transverse 4 cylinder. Yeah, it’s more expensive than an old bike but it is just as good looking and far better at being a motorcycle.

i mean yea but 250 gets old really quick. especially when you try and get out of the way of idiot drivers.

i bought my suzuki 500 for $1200 with 8600 miles on it

Not a huge motorcycle guy but I drove a (a while back so not %100 sure) 95ish ninja 250 and it was not great. Just left so much to be desired. I’d say go 500cc and up. I get the low displacement desire but 500-600 is still pretty small. I guess if your already on a moped this would be kind of a cool upgrade but if you already moped then you likely get the basics of two wheels bading so may as well get something bigger and keep the moped for the short trips.

Not if you know how to tune carbs it doesn’t.

and shit like this is why ppl die on bikes.

a 600cc class (sports bike anyways) has HP thats in the top 10% of whats avaiable in the motorcycle world. you do NOT give a new driver a car thats within the top 10% of hp, why would you do that with a bike?

I’m only going to be doing short trips. I have no interest in being a two wheels speed demon. Or even hitting the highway on a motorcycle at all.

10K is not a lot of miles for any bike. Sure that’s an impressive amount to put on a 250 Ninja, but that’s nothing for the bike itself.

Kurt Worden is a multi time finisher of the Iron Butt Rally on a Ninja 250. In 2017 he finished 21st overall by riding 9,700 miles in 10 days. Don’t underestimate what those little bikes can do.

If he’s riding a moped thats a good way to learn. I see your point but I have tons of buddies who jumped into the 600cc world and they were fine. The one friend that got a 250 sold it a couple months later and bought a 600cc. That said I dont own a bike because I’m dumb and would have certainly killed myself. Grew up riding dirt bikes so I’m comfortable enough to hop on a sport bike and take it for a spin but knew if I owned it I’d keep pushing it so bought a boat instead.

there is a difference between surviving on a 600 and actually being a good rider on a 600.

I can agree with that but you have to admit 600's are thousands of bikers a year gateway into biking and they are not all dying. Sure many have a mishap or something but your fooling yourself if you think 250 owners are not laying them down too. Be responsible and you get to live thats about how it pans out in the end (but not really because you have to factor in the the idiots playing on facebook while driving their car). Personally I would go with a 500-600 upright cruser style to get to the point that I wanted a sport bike but I wouldn’t bother with the 250 sport bike because to a big guy it feels like a glorified scooter and I would definitely be on the highway so it just wouldn’t cut it. 1st street bike i drove was a 5 or 600 shadow think it was an 86-89ish it was a blast too. Bikes are great fun be safe buddy!

Tuning, cleaning and rebuilding carbs isn’t helping you ride better. Pulling your bike out of storage and realizing it needs a carb rebuild/cleaning can put a lot of people off motorcycles, too. How many bikes are on Craigslist for sale that would run, but need carb work? Nobody wants to deal with that. While it’s not a deal breaker for most riders, it is a barrier to enjoying the sport for many people. Sometimes it’s nice to have something that just works all the time, whether you just pulled your bike out of storage after winter, or you just rode to a high altitude, or you went from a cold climate to a hot one. Carbs require more maintenance and skill to keep running properly while offering no benefits beyond price.

You are neck deep in survivorship bias. 600cc sport bikes are race bikes, end of story. They are not the most powerful/dangerous feeling bikes until >10k RPM (where few beginners are willing to go at first, but can easily go to with one mistake) because they lack torque, but they are very fast. One mistake with the throttle and you will be hitting felonious speeds in a matter of seconds.

The difference is that a 250 has to be ridden hard and will almost never give you more power than you can handle, even if you’re stupid with it. Your argument is ignorant and childish.

Ignorant and childish? Nice to meet you too. Thought I was trying to at least be civil. In some countries you cant just walk in and buy a 600 but in the US you can. Tons of people do and they don’t all die (alternative to your end of story) enjoy your day..

My point was that if you have the skills, carbs won’t keep you off a bike. I’m a car/motorcycle guy, so having mechanical skills is kind of apart of the fun for me.

I find older bikes much more enjoyable to ride and work on, and some of my favorite carb’d bikes are more expensive than their modern equivalents, so proce isn’t really a factor.

Telling people that a 600cc I4 is an ok starter bike is childish. Just because some people do it and live doesn’t mean it is a good idea, or should ever be recommended. I agree that people should be allowed to buy a 600 but they will be better off if they don’t. 600 sport bikes are designed to go as fast as possible within their engine class, they aren’t forgiving of mistakes. Learning how to ride on a Ninja 600 is like learning how to drive in Mustang GT, but without ABS or traction control.

I agree, I don’t mind working on carbs and doing a bit of extra maintenance for bikes and it can be fun. I’m thinking of the people that don’t have the skills, though. People new to bikes who probably don’t own an old car and have never heard the word ‘carburetor’ before. I just don’t equate learning to ride with learning to wrench. Let people discover carbs, two strokes and kick starters in their own time.
