Any transmission experts/mechanics who know 4x4s??

Kinja'd!!!

I found Wilcap makes an adapter for Chrysler flat 6s and Chevy trannys, says:

GM V8, 90 DEG AUTO PG, TH350, 400, 700R4, CHEVY OR BOP BOLT PATTERN to:

CHRYSLER/DODGE/PLYMOUTH FLATHEAD 6 CYL 201, 218, 230, 251, 265 CI (1933-1971) and I have a 230.

http://www.wilcap.com/wilcapstore.html# ... y=14420228

I don’t have any experience with 4x4s, will this adapter work with the 4x4s, the transfer case is after this and not affected right? I see some super duty 4x4 700R4s at Monster Transmission and they have several options.

I have looked at everything I can find. There is also a T5 kit and they make tough T5 trannys too. But I will probably only go on dirt roads, nothing crazy so I thought an auto would help me enjoy myself and other people could drive as well. I have a 240Z that is fun to drive, but I think I get my fill for shifting with that, I will mostly take it out to surf spots and on dirt roads.

If I swapped my axle gearing later would it effect anything with the auto or would it just shift when it feels it needs to? I was trying to get a 5th gear/overdrive and then I thought maybe an auto would be nice...

Expert thoughts?

I want to sort this out before I take it to my friend at his shop so I don’t sound like an idiot, I can sound like an idiot here first!

You may (will?) need a converter to from the gearbox to the stock transfer case as well.

The TH400 is not an uncommon fit into Nissan Patrol, Land Cruiser and Range Rover and they all need a converter to get the box to talk to the stock transfer case.

You are correct that the transfer case is on the other side and would not be affected... unless the new bellhousing and/or engine were bulkier in some way that interfered with the forward output shaft. Which is totally not impossible, depending on starter location.

However, I assume that the option also comes with a torque converter/flexplate setup that will work with the old motor? There’s more than just matching the bellhousing pattern - you have to have a matched TC setup and correct input shaft length.

Am I understanding rightly that you want to put a fancy trans and 4WD in something while keeping a primitive motor? Thus making it look mostly the same under the hood, but allowing auto shifting?

The auto’s shifting may need some adjustment, but basically it will shift when it feels it needs to based on load and revs, so... rear axle ratio won’t matter that much AFAIK.

It depends on the trans and what you’re bolting up behind it (t case). I know some GM transmissions have different starter locations, Bell housings and output shaft lengths and splines. You’d have to match up that to the transfer case. If you got a th400 with the case bolted up or a matched set then your a step ahead

Well I see all the levers there on the side so I guess we have to keep the tranny, I don’t know how we would get all that to fit and work with a different tranny not set up to mount those. I didn’t know those were literally mounted to it for the transfer case. Oh well, then I guess I can just change the axle gears at some point and get a bit more speed.

Yeah, I posted this pic above to RamblinRover and I think all the levers mounted to the tranny must make swapping in another pretty hard, I don’t know how to get around that without making a custom mount for those.

I don’t think I can without Leno’s people... I will just have to row and row the gears and swap the axle ratio so it goes 10mph faster. Some people get a transfer case cooler if you have to drive more than an hour at that speed. But they make pretty nice coolers for 4x4 people.

On top of everything that’s already been mentioned, depending on thickness of the adapter, mounting locations and driveline lengths may be affected.

I see some super duty 4x4 700R4s at Monster Transmission

700R4 will require a TV cable. You’ll have to figure out how to mount and adjust that, and if you botch it you will fry the trans. Just a warning. Certainly not impossible. But worth mentioning.

Yeah I don’t think I will, all the other stuff is mounted on the tranny. I think I will just swap the gearing in the axles for 55mph or so.

Gear vendors is out of the question, right?

The problem isn’t the tranny it’s all these things mounted to it. So we would have to fabricate a place for the transfer and e brake levers etc to be mounted to. And then the larger new tranny may take up the space where those live. The axle gears are only made by one place too and sold through Vintage Power Wagons.
