I'm Caught In a Very Annoying Part of My Job.

When things get slow for you, or you roll off a project at a terrible time (like maybe around the holidays) you basically have to cold call, or well, email people to beg for work.

I hate having cold call for anything, let alone to beg to be an excel and powerpoint lackey.

Ugh.

In the mean time, have a car.

I have to put together a 300pg closeout package for for a job that I’m the 4th PM running, and I’m missing half the shit I need for said package. It’s due on the 19th. On top of running 17 other projects. Fuck everything let’s burn this mother fucker down!

Wait, don’t you have a manager that assigns projects based on workload and has six to nine months of work scheduled out in advance?

If I’m not on a project I dont really have a manager to be honest. There are staffing people that try their best to get you on a project but few people are looking to pick anyone up until the new year starts up.

Weird. I have a manager that meets with our group monthly and tracks workload.

Do they not weight them? Get a base weight, say 50 screws, then weigh the whole batch, subtract the weight of the container, and extrapolate the amount of screws you have. Close enough.

I know the feeling. I was put on “Business Necessity Leave” for several weeks because of a lack of work. This is the worst time of the year to try to drum up work from my colleagues.

We have managers that meet weekly  to try to coordinate workloads. I just do work that isn’t in high demand, but when it is, THEY NEED IT NOW!!!!

When I was in your position I found 3-4 project managers that I really liked and just did work for them. They looked out for me and made sure I was always busy. In consulting if you are not busy you get your ass laid off pretty quickly.

Ungh. Yep. I can’t remember how many project I get brought into that are that exact scenario. Hey we forgot about your thing and it goes out in two weeks! Thanks!

I charge them a late fee to their budget.

Thankfully I’m still just an early first year analyst. But yeah, if things dont pick up by January I’m gonna start to really worry.

First year means cheap so you will be okay.

That sounds pretty awful, but usually with the new year comes new business so I’m hopeful things will pick up for you soon.

As an aside, I have a strong desire to make a street going replica of Smokey’s Chevelle. That tire and wheel package (or as close as I can get while having road legal tires), that stance, tuck the bumpers and copy some of his aero tricks, and that paint job, but without the numbers or decals. Just the two tone gold/black. With warmed over big block and a 4 speed.
