Redesigned for ‘18, which really is more like a heavy refresh, the QX80 soldiers on into 2018 with a new design to go head to head with other luxury full size suv’s. There are only 2 trim levels for the QX80, and they aren’t really even trims. Ones is base, the other is AWD. Both come powered with Nissan’s tried and true 5.6 V8, this time around bumped up to 400 horses. The base QX80 starts at $64,750 and comes pretty loaded with standard features:

7-speed automatic transmission

Leather-appointed seating

INFINITI Intelligent Key with Push Button Ignition

Bose® 13-speaker Premium Audio

Streaming Audio via Bluetooth

USB port for iPod® and compatible devices

Tri-Zone Automatic Temperature Control System

Moonroof

In typical luxury marque tradition, there are quite a few exterior and interior color options. There are 9 exterior color options:

Moonstone White

Mineral Black ($500 option)

Hermosa Blue

Champagne Quartz ($500 option)

Graphite Shadow

Black Obsidian

Smokey Quartz

Mocha Almond ($500 option)

Liquid Platinum

Kinja'd!!!

and 5 different interior leather and wood choice combinations:

Wheat Leather / Stratford Burl Trim

Graphite Leather / Stratford Burl Trim

Wheat Semi-Aniline Leather / Charcoal Burl Trim

Graphite Semi-Aniline Leather / Espresso Burl Trim

Saddle Brown Semi-Aniline Leather / Charcoal Burl Trim

And of course not all of these color combinations are able to be together or some interior leathers require option packages. For instance, you cant get Saddle Brown leather with Black Obsidian, but you can get it with Moonstone White, but that requires adding $13,850 in option packages.I choose Black Obsidian, with Graphite Leather.

Option package wise there are 6:

Drivers Assistance Package $2900: Pretty much the same BLIS,Intelligent Cruise Control etc that most cars come with now.

Theater Package $2450: A rear seat entertainment package that comes with dual 8 in monitors for the back seats, heated rear seats, remote, wireless headphones and jacks and aux ports.

22’ Wheel and Tire Package: 22’ wheels with All season tires. Steeply priced for $2800.

Splint Bench Package $250: Changes the second row seating to a splint 60/40 folding bench.

Deluxe Technology Package $5700: a comprehensive package that comes with a 15 speaker Bose surround sound system, climate controlled front seats, adaptive front lighting etc. Can only get this with charcoal or espresso trim.

Infiniti Wifi $450: Enables the QX to have a 4G LTE hotspot. Requires that you sign up for a monthly subscription where you choose between 1GB and 5GB monthly plans.

By default with the color options I have, the Drive Assistance Package was required. I added the Theater Package. I would have liked to add the Deluxe Tech Pack, but doing so would have required that I change the exterior color so I can change the interior color, because for whatever reason the package isn’t available with the graphite leather. And if I had done that, adding the Deluxe Tech Pack requires the 22’ wheel pack...Infiniti options are stupid ass hell.

There are 9 accessories that I didn’t add. Things like wind deflectors, running boards etc. All in, the base QX80 with the Driver Assistance pack and Theater Pack is $71,095.

The other “trim” of the QX80 is the awd, which isn’t an option on the base model. Its $67,850. On this model, I choose Moonstone White Exterior, with Saddle Brown interior. Choosing Saddle Brown automatically added the Driver pack, Theater pack, 22’ wheel Pack, and Deluxe Tech pack. With all these and not other options the awd QX is $83.195.

The QX80 should be a solid entry if you don’t want a Range Rover, Escalade or Navigator. But with the how the options are set up, I would skip it. For the price, they limit you too much with what you can and cant choose.

$64,000 base now, and another $2000 right out of warranty when all the catalytic converters fail. It’s a huge problem. one of the local parts warehouses sends out a set per day. This truck isn’t even that populous.

The 5.6 has catalytic converter problems?

That’s the sexiest color I’ve ever seen on a school bus.

A fully loaded Armada tops out around the same price where the QX80 starts.

I didn’t know that. Could explain the shitty mileage that anything with it gets as well.

Thats AARP Gold Metallic Mist. It usually comes on other senior mobiles like the Lexus ES350/Toyota Avalon, Camry, any Lincoln or Cadillac etc.

Still more options than a Land Cruiser.

Yep. Just $1765 separates an Armada Platinum Reserve and a base QX80. Thats the downside to most full size suv’s: pricing overlap with their platform brethren. Look at an Expedition Platinum and a Navigator.

True. But even then if you have a problem with the lack of options an Land Cruiser has, you can just head on over to you local Lexus dealer/spa and pick up an LX. But even then its not much better options wise. They come pretty loaded.

My LS400 just started asking for it’s second of the two catalytic converters after 315,000 miles but these QXs are really, really bad.

Could be for sure. Sending extra fuel into the cats is not healthy for the cats or  your wallet.

my cruiser is on original cats. Probably aren’t working so great but the downstream O2 sensors have been replaced so they must be doing something.

Yea its why my mom passed on them years ago when the Armada first debuted. Finding out that it just did get 14 city was a no go.

My dads Tundra does about the same but it’s geared insanely low.

I’ve said it before and i’ll say it again: the Armada/QX80 and Tundra/Sequoia are some of the most fuel inefficient vehicles on the market today. So inefficient they could be American. Which is weird, especially in the Tundra/Sequoia’s sense because of how Toyota has been about their hybrid push.

Yeah, it’s absolutely ridiculous the abysmal gas mileage the Japanese trucks get. I don’t understand.

That, this refresh thats more than a redesign, and the fact that Infiniti has the Q70L as its flagship makes it seem like Nissan really either doesnt have the money to properly make Infiniti a luxury player or they dont care to.

Well, they took the g wagon approach, that beast sells like crazy here in Mexico, its the only car they have pretty much!

If it aint broken don’t fix it! think of where nissan has spent money, the Q60, that v6 , the elecrtonic steering, stuff like that!

True. But they do things that make me think what I said before to be true. For instance, here in the US, in actuality, we’ve had the Patrol in its current irritation since about 2010, when the QX56 got redesigned. It wasn’t until 2016 that Nissan finally gave it to us with the “redesigned” Armada. Why weren’t the 2 redesigned together?

I’ve wrote before about Nissan letting their models sit for long without resigns or major updates. Frontier,Z,GT-R all need major updates if not outright replacements.

Well, car manufacturers are lead by profits, if a car is profitable, regardless of its age, it remains in production. Think of them as very lazy dogs that only move once you offer a treat!

If the GTR still sells, it wont be re designed, such perhaps is true of the Z, although perhaps the case with the Z is linked closer to the segment becoming smaller and smaller.

Companies are lazy man, its why comunism didn’t work and why comcast and other monopolistic enterprises are still ran like in the 1980s, once you own a certain portion of the market, RnD becomes a guttable expense!

That drives me crazy that you have to get the rear seat entertainment to get rear heated seats. I’d buy the Navigator over the QX for that reason alone.

I would too. I honestly dont know why rear seat entertainment systemsare even still being offered. Kids are all about hand held tech. I dont even have DVD’s anymore for my son to watch. I have USB’s of shows or he watches Netflix. Its just wasted money I think.

I had a previous generation Armada rental for about 2.5 weeks. My only gripe was that it wasn’t slightly more luxurious. Seems like this refresh has that. The base Armada is $46k. Just buy that. It’s basically the same. And judging by what most kids do to an interior, skip the fancy light colored seats.

That’s the downside to the Armada/QX80: they are too similar to really warrant getting one over the other. At least Ford has made strides with differentiating the Expedition/Navigator interiors:
