I know next to nothing about them, but can 190e cosworth’s be picked up cheap?

Kinja'd!!!

Not the Evo, of course. Just the standard one. Where can I learn more about them?

yeah, hit up Martin Brundle. He has a pretty low opinion of them, would likely sell cheap.

Define “cheap”...

They are very much not cheap.

The cheapest MB is often the most expensive, so tread carefully.

The nicest original 16 valve cars seem to be topping out around 20K at most on this side of the pond, use that as a guide. You can get them much cheaper, but rehab costs will be high if you want it done right (esp bodywork/paint).

“can 190e cosworth’s be picked up cheap?”

Only slightly cheaper than the other car in the picture.

You can get a really rough one for $5-8k, but that’s signing yourself up to pay easily $10k more to get it in good shape. Or you can get a good one for $15-20k. Prices have nearly doubled in the last year alone....I know, I’ve been shopping for one and kicking myself at a couple that I passed up last year for prices we’ll never see again.

Craigslist has examples from $10-20k. Drivers on one end of the spectrum and garage queens on the other. The motor and the eighties steering have me wondering if the driving experience would be worth the money though, you know?

Exactly. When it comes to vintage cars like this it is best to spend up front than to face a pile of bills later.

My Merc mechanic said the 190E-16s and the like are kind of trouble.

I’ve driven two of them. They’re fun and engaging, but they’re certainly not very fast by modern standards. The driving dynamics are great and they look and feel very cool. Including the “eighties steering”—definitely a throwback experience.

Yeah I’m imagining something similar to my old E24 in speed and steering feel

Unless you had an M6, it’s livelier—the engine is a high-revving 4, after all—but yeah, it’s all very ‘80s German.

The cost of an engine rebuild and quality paint job will likely equal a nice original car with no needs.

I do love the way they look. 80s German is always alright by me.
