Why aren't there so many cool custom-made trucks and delivery cars?

Stuff like the weinermobile? In europe you sometimes see a 30's truck, like a Ford AA with a decal for a craft beer. Or the Minis with the RedBull thing in the back. But other than those, I rarely see any creative advertisement/delivery cars and trucks.

Do you guys think it’s JUST because of the cost or is there another reason?

It’s not just cost. You get a better result for much less by advertising with Google, Facebook or some other social media empire. Why dress up a car under those circumstances unless you are in the business of dressing up cars?

Companies that don’t make cars make dumb choices about their advertising vehicles, and don’t have to drive them.

The Red Bull Minis are a great example, as are the Domino’s DXP/Chevy Spark cars. The DXP put so much effort into making the driver’s rear door into the keep-warm oven, when they already are starting with a hatchback which has a bigger and better opening in the back, and on a tiny car where it’s literally just a few more steps to the rear of the car. Even worse if the delivery person has to park on a functional street and then has to be even more in the street in order to unload their wares from the side-mounted hot box.

The Minis looked distinctive, but oddly gave up potential giveaway space by removing the top half of the rear cargo area to make room for the big fake can. Apparently the fake can also caused a lot of NVH, which made driving it that much worse.

Cost is a big part of it. A standard large van is around £15K. We’ve had one built on a new platform cab and the cost for the build excluding the internals was nudging £40K 7 years ago. It’s probably more now. These are a bit different that they actually take money as opposed to the slightly vague advertising.

Unless you need to there’s a lot that can be done with a distinctive colour scheme. Everyone knows a UPS or DHL van when they see one.

Here it’s definitely legality issues. Wienermobile would have to fulfill similar technical requirements than the rest of new cars. Which is quite a lot rules and regulations.

I do remember the Red Bull cars. Here they were new Minis and and tiny Suzuki 4x4s. Even these were in very grey area for Finish legislation. Red Bull also circled around a bunch of Volvo Suggas. Some of these were genuine things but some where (ugly) replica bodies on top of something fairly modern. I think they drove them with foreign plates but my picture doesn’t reveal what country they were from.

Cost, not just for the original build, but also for the insurance. Vinyl wraps are cheap and have little impact on the drivability, cost to repair, and cost to insure. That’s why there are so many wrapped company vehicles on the road and so few custom builds.

That being said, I see a lot of businesses with old cars in various stages of restoration parked out front.

Have you seen one of those Minis with the can removed? They’re like a micro ute!!!

Also, I’ve seen a current gen Mini with a can on it, so whatever company is doing those conversions is still churning them out.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say it’s a lack of imagination. I see guys rolling around with brand new lifted bro trucks all the time advertising their shitty business. People spend stupid amounts of money on shitty advertising, so I don’t think cost is the real issue. That said, I think for the old 40's delivery vans, the cost of updating it to something with modern reliability and safety might be prohibitive. A business vehicle with a carburetor in this day and age is just.... unwise.

There’s a Wienermobile based on a Mini as well.

Just as the Wisconsin plate in the windshield says, it’s called LTL LINK, and the back bodywork was even custom stretched.

The Minis aren’t the only ones Red Bull has done with the cans, either...

I can’t seem to access the images outside of seeing them as Google search results, but they’ve also done Suzuki Vitaras and Ford Explorer Sport Tracs.
