But at least the last episode further proved a point: Front wheel drive drag cars are a monumentally stupid oxymoron.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Who wins? The guy with the most horsepower? The guy with the biggest drag slicks? The guy with the best aero setup?

Nope, it’s the only guy with an AWD setup... because physics you morons.

I saw at least 1 broken car at the end of the race and one broke before the race.

So with only 2/7 breaking, I must say I’m genuinely impressed. It’s cool that they gave him a tuned Si at the end though.

and another shift and another shift and another shift. Even then, nobody was gonna catch the awd guy, he won by like 1/3 the length of the track.

Is there a form of racing where FWD is naturally superior? I guess tray racing, but it’s kinda a requirement.

I don’t know that there’s anywhere where it’s absolutely superior, but there have been some crazy fast EF civics at Bathurst and in World Time Attack.

The Super Touring class in the 1990s. 2 liter production body 2WD saloons, originated in BTCC in 1990, replaced Group A in most global touring car series. The class that brought you this:

On introduction RWD cars carried a weight penalty because everyone “knew” RWD would be faster. By year 3 that penalty was gone. From year 4 till it ended EVERY championship winner was FWD.

Basically I think it came down to relatively sane power to weight ratio, more manufacturers with FWD platforms they wanted to sell, and enough doorbanging that stable handling was important.

I’ve done drag racing once and it’s exciting in person while driving a vehicle. It’s not particularly interesting watching the event whatsoever. It’s boring as hell, tbh

While FWD isn’t optimal, I definitely haven’t had any issues running “superior” rwd cars into the ground myself. 99% of owning a powerful FWD is knowing how to drive it, knowing how to setup an suspension and tire pressures. FWDs on radials have been 9s multiple times. It’s definitely not impossible.

Anything low-hp (like sub-200) will tend to favour FWD cars due to the reduced drivetrain loss. If you look at the lowest classes of racing, especially rally, FDWD cars tend to do a lot better.

I’m not trying to turn this into a RWD masterrace argument, I’m just pointing out that this is the worst application for FWD cars.

Nah, that would be drifting :P Seriously though, I don’t disagree that FWD is at a physical disadvantage, but it can be overcome in other areas. It just wasn’t in these particular circumstances.

Plus the FWD car tend to be lighter. Not that that’s a rule. A Miata is a lot lighter than a Mk4 Golf.

Agreed. All else being equal, a FWD drivetrain can be made lighter than a RWD one. So, a FWD Miata would be lighter than a RWD one :)

They both made me want an EF Civic, which is tough considering the stereotype that ricer-bros have given them.
