Unpopular opinion: I really fucking like the WJ Grand Cherokee.

I don’t know why, but I love them...they are so regular looking, but so elegant too....

Kinja'd!!!

I think these cars are really elegant, classically elegant I believe... Plus, becoming cheap in Mexico...

Here, one with only 80,000 km , I think the Powertech v8, and 4x4...

Here, one with rear wheel drive. Its more expensive though...

I’d love to see this car have the ICON treatment like this Caprice.

I really, really want one with a nice HEMI v8, a better transmission, and beefy ass brakes.

My parents had a black WJ when I was a child... I guess it just reminds me of my childhood; my family is really into jeeps and we’ve owned all the way from the Grand Wagoneer up to the WK.

YES.....

Its too old for me... I like this sort of odd relation between square and roundy styling.

Rented one of these back in ‘01 - nice simple vehicle. No shitty design.

I remember asking my mum about the transfer case lever, she obviously never knew about it, she never took our WJ off road, it was more of a lifestyle thing... yes.. we were one of those people...

I like the styling a lot too, and they are a bargain on the used market compared to a 3rd gen 4Runner or something like that. I just like the v8s available in the Zj more than the 4.7 and 4.7ho. A wj with a Hemi would be awesome though!

Other than the first gen, I think it’s been one of or the best looking US SUV. Another unpopular opinion, I have never liked anything to come out of ICON, especially that caprice. I’d take a beaten up cop version over that.

I get it, they tend to be very dramatic.

I only want a huge engine with powerful brakes and suspension from this era in that package. I also absolutely adore the first gen Range Rover!

A thousand times, yes.

If my ‘02 Overland would have had a bit more interior space, I’d have kept it forever. I loved everything about it, but I found it to be just a bit too cramped.

I know there are people that will swear by them I remember back when they were current the dealership I sold at bought 15 previous rentals, all of them a year or two old, and I’ll tell ya every one felt different, steered different, made different vibes, and sounds. Not a good sign.

The question is, which will drain your wallet first; the horrific gas mileage, or the repairs? The nice thing about broken Jeeps is that you’re not at the gas pump. Cool looking though, in a old SUV kind of way.

I’ve owned two of these now, current one is an 02 overland with the 4.7 H.O. and it’s perfect with a 2" lift and nice tires. The transmission backing the 4.7 is the 545rfe and its a damn good transmission. My 99 was a 4.0/42re combo and I let that go because of that with 392,000 miles on it and it still had its original trans.

When these first came out I hated them, then they grew on me. Now, I really love that body style. They look great lifted as well, ride nice, have a pretty nice interior, plus 4.0.

I’ve owned one for nigh on 7 years now. I’ve been a licensed driver for almost 13. It’s been my favorite SUV I’ve ever driven.

I would like to see one get the Davis Auto Sports treatment.

My mom had an ‘87 XJ, ‘95 ZJ, and her last Jeep was an ‘04 WJ... all of them were Laredo trims, 4x4, 4.0L. They were great. I especially loved the WJ.

My favorite year for the WJ was 2001, when the Limited was available with big chunky five spoke wheels. For some reason that wheel never was common in my area.

There is no such thing as a good PowerTrash. Period.

These things ate 4.7's by the dozen . In warranty . Any electrical problem, car was done, period. Brakes... existed. They started cutting big corners mid-run (like the wood interior trim, and the leather on the steering wheel.) The only one worth owning is one with a 4.0, and those are Laredos, which means the interior isn’t . And consistency... uh... no. Just.. no.

Which SUCKS. Because it does look good.

It is a really pretty car... Which is why I’m very much in favor of an Icon version.

I’ve owned a couple. The issues with the 4.7 are vastly overstated. If you overheat it, you’ll blow the head gaskets. If you don’t keep the oil clean, it’ll sludge up. The uncontrollable failure point is the possibility of a dropped valve seat, but the early Gen 3 Hemis shared this problem, too. The 4.0 also had issues with shattering piston skirts and cracking heads. The V8 models got a vastly better transmission. The electronics weren’t any worse than any other car o f this vintage other than the wiring between the doors and body having a tendency to break as the years went on. The brakes are a popular upgrade for TJs and XJs. The HVAC is plagued with flimsy blend doors, but there are all-steel replacements available.

I quite like them.

The Overland is peak WJ. The 4.7 is a decent motor provided it was always taken care of, and that is hard to find nowadays.

The 4.0s of this era were pretty hit or miss. Camshaft wear issues and coil pack issues also were problems to add to blowing up pistons.

Sister had a bright red ‘95. It’s what I learned to work on cars with. H er boyfriend and I did a full service on that thing: engine , trans, diff fluid changes, plugs and wires (i forget if it was COP yet or not), coolant flush, new water pump, brakes all around. I liked that boyfriend, until he got arrested for grand theft.....

My mom traded in an eagle talon tsi awd for one of these. Car was supposed to be handed down to me, she lied to me.

Before she met my dad she traded in a ‘69 Camaro SS w/396 and 4 speed for a Vega.

She makes bad car choices after making a good one all the time.

When I was a kid I thought these looked so good. Now I know about the reliability issues, and even though all the local examples for sale are both overpriced and completely roached 3 times over, I still kinda want one.

Some call it “the affordable overland machine”

I think it’s true considering that the base engine, the 4.0 i6, was made basically everywhere in the world, and it’s still a jeep.

I keep thinking about the couple that overland across Latin America in a Toyota... getting spares for that is gonna be tough, a WJ though? Super easy: widely sold and available vehicle.
