All my attempts to purchase a DSLR this previous week were thwarted at every single turn.

Finally decided to buy a reasonably-priced D3400? Sorry, sold out.

Refurbished T6 Rebel for $248? Sold out! Stock replenished? Sold out again!

Before long it was Saturday and time for me to go to the LA Auto Show armed with nothing more than a GS5 with the Open Camera app.

OpenCamera is exactly what it sounds like. It’s an open-source camera app adding extra functionality to your existing Android phone. You have access to ISO, white balance, and different focus modes in addition to the usual scene/lighting modes.

Here are the photos I took in chronological order with commentary where I thought deserving. I only played with the sliders in Windows 10 for maybe one or two of these photos.

Let’s start with the Entrance leading into the West Hall. Here’s a Saleen1. Car looks somewhat clean but the background could be better. This was shot in full Auto.

Porsche cordoned off a showroom to proselytize the Gospel of Ferdinand Porsche and His Good Works. Yes, that’s a 911 GT3 Touring behind this 911 Carrera T.

Galpin, the SoCal mega-chain, had a huge exhibit doing double-duty as both a showcase and a retrospective.

South Hall didn’t have as many new cars and I couldn’t get a decent shot of the Mazda Vision Coupe.

I thought the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE turned out very well.

OpenCamera isn’t going to replace a DSLR any time soon, but it does an admirable job adding to your smartphone camera’s feature set. I recommend it to everyone.

I did manage to snag a refurbished Rebel T6 from the Canon store for well under $300 a few minutes ago. Had to refresh the page 10,000 times until it came back in stock for 10 seconds...here’s to hoping Canon can actually scrounge up one.

Mazda really kicked some ass in the autoshow.

Brought in all the concepts and everything.
