Life brought me to this very fancy neighborhood of Mexico City, since it is also Sunday, I decided to use this time to also spot some cars.

People here get very angry when you take pictures of their cars, so most of these pictures are stealthy.

It looks like a GMC to me. Look at the grille/bumper.

Gotta be that guy again . . . based off of the chrome grill protrusions, I think it’s a 55-56 GMC.

I would have walked right by that X5M without a glance, so I think it balances out :p.

Well, BMWs sorta stand out here in Mexico City. I found this E39 M5 lying around back in the summer: stock, clean, and beautifully red.

I found this one for sale... very expensive, and that low  RAM air intake looks like trouble in a city prone to flash flooding.

Angry because they are hiding something? Or just self-righteous paranoia?

Triumph is a TR6, definitely restored, as they aged like milk.

Who knows really... paranoia I suppose.. fear that they can be tracked down, but if you roll about in a red ferrari being followed by a white dodge, is there such thing as privacy for you?

Yes.... its a TR6

Fear that embezzled fortunes may be discovered?

Public roads, if they don’t like it, f’em.

Lots of insane and sketchy wealth in my area too, but they don’t seem to care about attention, as they know they are untouchable.

Well, actually, Liable laws in Mexico are very strict, and cops tend to be really unprofessional. So really its a mixed bag.

I took the picture of the fezza real early, so if the body guards chose to beat me up and break my phone, they would’ve gotten away with it, unless someone was there to videotape it.

Body guards being assholes is a real issue in Mexico City. Many of them are good people just trynna earn a buck, but their bosses sometimes ask them to be assholes. So naturally the state gov’t is starting to force them into using special, easy to describe and pull over license plates.

Kinja'd!!!

Its actually kind of pathetic that our police force is so unprepared that bodyguards are so prevalent.

Arm yourself and take out a few thugs if they come after you? No libel issues when taking photos of vehicles on public streets. And yeah, maybe don’t go solo.

In these days of social media, just find who they are, go to the internet, and dox the living shit out of them. Revenge is a dish best served cold.

Seattle. Now a klondike for offshore-based money laundering in local real estate - crooked officials and “businessmen” from all over like to play the local property casino. It’s like Vancouver has been for awhile.

Well, getting a gun in Mexico is actually quite easy... illegally.

Having a gun inside the Mexico City Metropolitan area is almost impossible though...

You must be a police officer, soldier, olympic shooter, or a farmer in order to have a gun.

In order to be a bodyguard you must be a police officer.

If you are a business person and get a credible threat, the ARMY by way of the national defense secretary can issue a permit after passing many exams. Even then, you can only buy a weapon from SEDENA in Mexico City, no automatics. Even then, you can only have the gun inside your home (or inside your vehicle because it’s legally an extension of your residence) and locked. Nowadays you can get stopped in Mexico City and asked if you carry a weapon. If you do, out goes the permit! Also stores and restaurants are begining to ban weapons (this is mostly for the body guards)

Buy some tomato plants, now you’re a farmer :)

Armed ex-cop bodyguards wouldn’t put me at ease, for sure.

Not ex cops, they carry the badge, I’ve seen those guys arrest people... its insane.

Dude, Mexico does take guns seriously... I can’t just make an urban garden and call myself a farmer! they do control guns with a tight grasp... at least inside mexico city.

That’s even more insane - ripe for abuse. Does Mexico control guns to help people, or control guns to help the people who control the (wealth) people? I suspect the motive, or how it works in practice, hasn’t helped much. Probably wouldn’t be much different if they just gave up and let it ride USA style. And I am saying that as someone not generally against a measure of gun control, at least when it is uniform.

That’s even more insane - ripe for abuse.

They are cops, and they do carry special license plates after all, so uniformed cops can actually detain them for permits and if they do some douche maneuver like parking in the middle of an express way (which they do... often)

Plus, think of these people like off duty cops, just because they don’t carry the uniform it doesn’t mean they aren’t trained and have privileges that can only be acquired through training. I recognize most cops here in Mexico are corrupt dirt bags, but, those who are good, and want to keep my city safe, well... I salute them and honor them like family.

Does Mexico control guns to help people, or control guns to help the people who control the (wealth) people? I suspect the motive, or how it works in practice, hasn’t helped much.

These laws were passed back in the 1970's when inequality and crime wasn’t that bad. It was a public safety issue.

Well the thing is that we have a country with very loose gun laws to the north, and a shit ton of cocaine to the south, naturally we got caught in the crossfire. Add cheap guns and expensive cocaine with poorly paid cops and you’ve got yourself a case of corruption and widespread death!

I am not blaming our issues on foreigners, that would be childish, we brought narcos on ourselves and we could stop it if we really wanted to, It is my responsibility, and that of every Mexican, to promote the rule of law, civil rights, and prevent this kind of violence, this is something we have failed thus far.

I don’t think these gun control laws are particularly bad. I could get a gun if I really wanted to, its just that they’d make sure I wasn’t crazy enough to be dangerous with one. Its one of the reasons why cases of shootings by someone with mental health issues inside a school or a city are rarer than in the US.

I think that gun control is good. We live in a society where ideally we don’t need guns, and in the worst case many of us aren’t really trained into using them. I understand that we can hate the idea of being vulnerable to bad people, but the reality is that guns really don’t make as big a difference as we all wished it did. I’m not Jack Bauer, and I wont be able to train like a professional shooter/self defense guru if I want to have another job too!

I know people that carry guns here (legally,obs.. again its not impossible if you really want to!) and its all a façade; this guy was mugged at gun point and instead of only taking his wallet, they took his fancy ass Beretta too. (In very special cases you can get concealed carry permits, I think I forgot to mention it)

I think that gun control is very important, but I cannot deny that for some people it is a necessity: farmers, zoo keepers, olympic shooters, and people that survey large swaths of land, they need guns. Guns are also really fun to shoot! So I understand them. I think that we should have gun laws that let responsible gun owners have guns. But we can’t pretend we can defend ourselves with a weapon like that.

I am not a soldier, I could never bare killing someone, even if this person threatened me. Even if I could kill someone who wanted to mug me, then the arguments for “self defense” are shaky at best.

Probably wouldn’t be much different if they just gave up and let it ride USA style.

The conservative party, PAN, actually proposed it, but we don’t want it. We don’t want more guns, we want less guns!

We live, every day, inside a more polarized nation, one where cities enjoy relative calmness and well being while the countryside is a mess. That’s why I support farmers having weapons, but god all mighty please don’t give people in a city the right to a gun!

No doubt 99% of the cops, like here, are great. but the 1% cause 99% of the problems, and there’s probably less accountability there than here - and that’s saying something. I just have to be leery when they are also bodyguards who can get jerky if someone commits a huge crime like photographing a car on a public road.

Gun control laws can be great, but I think they need to be enacted before the cat is out of the bag, so to speak. Too late for the US in my opinion, and probably too late for Mexico too. Control new sales to maybe prevent the wrong people from buying new material, but crafty ones will just find it on the secondary market.

The world needs less guns, but it also needs less of a socio-economic gap, and less dirty wealth flaunting around being offended by photos.

Well, what the richer people forget is that without people below them, the pyramid falls.

For every employee Walmart changes for a machine, there’s one person less in that community that wants to (or can!) purchase anything there.

It seems like they indeed forget. No doubt emboldened by official protection.

Eventually there will have to be something like a universal basic income - population is just outpacing jobs for all, especially with tech phasing out some human interaction (like at Walmart). Maybe that will see a little less crime and need for guns.
