The Ruskies claim it’s the best airplane in its class.

Kinja'd!!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

But both the design of the plane and this presentation video looks so 1980's .

It’s a good thing this new Russian plane isn’t too advanced, considering that the 737 is more than 50 years old, and the A320 isn’t that new either.

To be honest I can’t see many countries that aren’t Russian allies or have existing trade deals with Russia such as India, buying these.

Much of the rest of the world is flying Airbus, Boeing, etc... to train pilots and maintenance crew for these would be cost inhibitive.

I would assume that 737 max 10 and A320neo is at least 1 to 2 generations ahead.

I’ve flown in soviet Era tu-154s before. This seems like a slight improvement, though I can’t imagine it ever making money. This is more about Russia not relying on the EU or US if a trade war or embargo happens as air transport still is a strategic industry. Also maybe Syria and NK and some other places will buy some due to heavily subsidized prices.

The Sukhoi superjet was partly designed with Boeing, Interjet flies them with the a320, no idea if its good or bad, it had a minor recall a year or so ago

If they can find a way to upgrade the avionics beyond vacuum tubes, they could add another 20 seats.

Russia doesn’t seem to have as much allies as the Soviet Union did. They can’t count on China either, as they have their own new plane.

Still, the prospect of losing orders in emerging markets, to cheaper rivals, will probably make Boeing and Airbus be less conservative in the development of their future planes. And that’s not a bad thing.

They must of got a good deal to go from buying new A320s to replace used A320s and then buy these Russian units.

Is this a cost cutting exercise for flights within south America.

Do they have approval to fly in American and Canadian air space?

The C919 was developed with, aircraft component suppliers, engine suppliers, and bombardier at least.

I wouldn’t call it the best, but it’s probably not anything significantly worse than the 20 year old birds in the Delta fleet.

I mean, they do. Interjet is one of the best low cost airlines of north america.

I’m not sure they fly the superjets up to the United States. But considering it was a joint effort between the US and Russia, I doubt it wouldn’t be able to!

The superjet had FAA approval last time I checked.

Edit: interjet flies the superjet interchangeably with the a320

I looked at the rest of the fleet earlier, a mix of A320, A320NEO, A321 and A321NEO then these.

Training the pilots to be compliant in both Airbus and these can’t be cost effective.

well, I mean... no.

But its a smaller jet, so perhaps the gains are elsewhere.

Think that a route that perhaps only makes sense with a small jet, or extra capacity for seasonal routes.

In order for interjet to compete with Aeromexico conect (using b737 and embraiers) they need a smaller embraier equivalent. Aeromexico also has the type certificate issue you mention, I think volaris and viva aerobús don’t have those domestic market interests; they much rather have more routes outside Mexico, so they only use a320 and I think b737...

And I must add that Mexico still sits atop the North American tectonic plate.

Reading the supplier list tells us just how not -Russian this thing really is. Pratt, Hamilton Sunstrand, Rockwell Collins, Meggitt, Eaton, Goodrich, Honeywell, Thales... this thing could have been a Bombardier, Airbus, or Boeing with that supplier roster.

Oh, and carbon composites in civil aviation are yawn inducing in this millennium and nothing to brag about. Shit, Beechcraft (RIP) was making Burt Ruttan’s plastic junk Beech Starships well over 30 years ago. Hell, they continued that construction method with the Beechcraft Premier and Hawker 4000 until they imploded less than a decade ago. Both designs took flight long before the 787 “poster child for plastic airplanes” came around.

Back on topic: This plane is as Russian as apple pie and twice as unimpressive.

Drunk aeronautical engineer is done ranting and going to bed.
