Temperature inversion , a reversal of the normal behaviour of temperature in the troposphere (the region of the atmosphere nearest the Earth’s surface), in which a layer of cool air at the surface is overlain by a layer of warmer air. (Under normal conditions air temperature usually decreases with height.)

I mentioned the inversion we’re experiencing in a comment to an earlier post but your pictures really hammer home how it traps air at lower elevations. Hopefully the forecasts are right and this will dissipate by next weekend.

Yeah, it’s pretty bad right now. No sun in the valley all week. I’m going to California next week so I’ll get some sun at least for a day.

It’s a harsh transition. 25 degrees to 10 degrees in about 100 feet.

Welcome to Seattle this week. Cold and foggy near the sound, sunny and warm (ish) in the mountains and at the coast.

I was talking to some one today who was planning on moving there and have a buddy that occasionally goes there. I need to make it up that far one of these days. I have done big sky, bridger, and montana snow bowl. A bit of backcountry at lolo pass as well but have heard great things about whitefish

We get a lot of snow, the resort is huge and there are numerous back country routes accessible from the resort. Since the resort is all on forest service land they don’t give a shit if you ski out of bounds. There is a direct flight from SLC to FCA otherwise it’s a full days drive.
