FUCK YOU SUBARU!

Okay, got that out. So my plan this weekend was to change my timing belt because it’s due on my 2012 Subaru Outback 2.5. Well things have not been going to plan. I had to make a god damn special tool to be able to loosen up the crank pulley bolt. I didn’t want to pull out the radiator just to get an impact gun in there. Besides when I go to tighten the bolt back up, i have to torque it THEN go 60 degrees or something. I am not enjoying this. I started this morning at 7:30. I had to stop at 2:45 because my wife has a music gig at a winery. I am using this time to hopefully unwind for tomorrow where I have to finish removing the old belt, install new belt and idlers, water pump, thermostat, etc... fuck me.

One trick for loosening crank bolts without removing the rad is to put a long wrench on it and wedge it against the ground. Then start the engine and quickly turn it off. Takes a few cranks but unless it’s rusted on there will work. The weight of the vehicle will hold the wrench down while the crank turns and loosens the bolt. I had a ‘93 Loyale that this didn’t work on and ended up needing heat and multiple hits from a 900 lb-ft impact gun. That fucker was on tight.

Kinja'd!!!

Get an oil filter wrench like this. Fits on a 3/8 drive ratchet, so stick a long extension on it and it’ll easily reach the deep access oil filter, and it clamps down on the small filter.

Seriously, don’t let the oil filter access make you give up on changing your own oil, the right tool will cost less than what you would pay extra at the dealership.

Good luck tomorrow man.

What the fuck Subaru? Do you hate people? Your commercials are so friendly. I may continue to pay the dealer to change the oil because fuck that.

I think that WAS their plan.

I am not sure I would feel comfortable doing that on this car. On a car I care very little about, I would attempt this.

I have to change the T-Belt on the DD soon. I think I may just pay the dealer to do it to save my sanity. I’ve done it once before on a Civic, and it took me 2 days. This one is right against the frame.

Coffee cup on the filter makes it so much better. Get the right size filter wrench, loosen filter, reach up there with a medium/large coffee cup and put the whole filter in the cup. Back it off and catch all the drips at once.

Another option if there’s holes in the crank pulley. Would be what I did with my old Civic. Wrap a chain around the pulley (tbh I forgot exactly how I did that) then wrap it around an engine mount and padlock it so that there’s no slack. Then just stand/jump on a breaker bar. But since your engine is longitudinal that won’t work, so I’d just get the pole thingy from a floor jack and use that as a giant cheater bar.

You have confirmed my belief that Subarus aren’t worth it, because boxer engines seem unnecessarily complicated for a street car.

I’ve used a gallon ziploc bag before for my Dakota oil filter to save the oil from going up my arm to my shirt sleeve. Similar idea as a coffee cup, just a bit more flexible, but a bit warmer too.

Just make sure your pulley is keyed before you do that. I don’t remember what car is was, but I read recently about someone that tried that, found out the pulley and timing sprocket weren’t keyed, and that both relied on the clamping force of the crank nut. Of course it was an interference engine, and the pistons ate the valves.
