What do you do when the stranger next to you at the bar starts crying?

Kinja'd!!!

We were talking normally, next thing I know, the tears start. I have no answer for a stranger. How do you handle it when you have your own shit to bury?

Same thing you do whenever any adult cries around you, slowly and casually walk away and hope they don’t notice you.

Only had this happen to me once. I asked the guy what was wrong, and it turns out he was feeling trapped in an abusive relationship. His boyfriend would drink and beat him, and threaten him whenever he tried to stand up for himself. I just listened, offered a few words of encouragement, and told him he had to get out of that situation immediately . He thanked me, gave me a hug, and left.

Every now and then, I find myself wondering whatever happened to him. I hope he left that guy. I hope he’s safe.

I had this happen with a friend so it wasn’t the same but I just asked “Do you want support or do you need a minute alone?” And I walked him to a quieter corner of the bar and stood guard for a bit. Any looky-loos who walked up, Ijust told them he lost someone recently and he needs some space. I forgot why exactly he was crying, but it did the trick. We did end up leaving the place not long after though. Didn’t think it right to stay too long after that.

I’d probably buy them a drink and listen, and then not be able to sleep later. Not that I’ve ever done that before...

I’ve never cried in a bar. But outside, yeah. Mostly I’d rather drink alone unless I’m already with people I know.

I’m not in that place for conversation. I’m drinking to be alone.

Just sit there and listen.

You can’t fix their problems, but you can listen.

As for me when I went through rough times, I would just talk it out with whoever was willing to listen. And in the case of the time after my wife left with the kids, I frequently got teary. But at least I still had my cat.

Sometimes a good cry can be emotionally beneficial.
