A friend of mine sent me a tweet about the previous professions of the many leaders of Europe

Kinja'd!!!

Now, where the eye meets, clearly the countries with engineers (Greece and Turkey most prominently) are kinda messed up, he said engineers shouldn’t be leaders, only lawyers should. Now, he triggered me.

Because I actually think he is kinda right, engineers don’t have a job when it comes to legislation or judiciary positions. But, what about the executive branch? Because governments do a lot of shit that generally has to do with other professions that offer stark contrast with law. But here in Mexico lawyers basically control the cabinet , I’m not sure this is good. I’d argue for more engineers and finance people. thoughts?

I would’ve thought more heads of government would have political science degrees. But, it does make sense the amount of lawyers. Every other politician seems to have a law degree no matter the country.

Eh, Finland isn’t too bad. Moldova is somewhere in between since they have a breakaway state in the east. Also, Poroshenko (Ukraine) having a degree in international relations is kind of amusing given what’s gone on there the past few years.

Which gov has that?

I think that we need a board of directors and not a secretary that is appointed by a president (the board perhaps partially chosen by the president) , I’d love it if more Mexican institutions were independent.

This is not a valid argument. It assumes that the state of these nations are the way they are because of their current political leader. In reality, the political and economic conditions of Greece and Turkey did not happen overnight. You’d need to look at their previous leaders’ education background for a more realistic perspective.

I work for an engineering firm. From my perspective, most engineers lack the social skills to be effective leaders. There are a few sales guys that manage to get degrees in engineering, but they are few and far between. It’s the social sales guys that bring in all of the work because they know how to talk to the politicians, but they can’t engineer their way out of a paper bag. The politicians are the ones that have all the public contracts (think roads, bridges, civil works). The sales guys get the contracts. The engineers are the ones who get all the work done.

Argument I made, I have no social skills and I want to be one!

But I think that having someone being able to call out shit by the bad engineers is very important and lacking here. In the end the engineers might have no social skills but they certainly have great understanding of math, and logic

I am an engineer. I have no social skills, people sometimes get wide eyed talking to me like they can’t believe I just said something or that I just sat and looked at them but I’m a bit extreme (p.s. it’s also pretty lonely not getting people socially). I’m pretty good at talking people into things even if I’m full of shit.

Once you enter the profession, you will learn that situations are always more complicated than you realize. In that tunnel collapse, if they had closed the road and the tunnel didn’t collapse, the public would have been angry, businesses would have lost time and money, everyone would have blamed the officials, and the officials would have blamed the engineers. When the contracts are written on road jobs, they often contain language that imposes fines for interrupting traffic. This creates an incentive to take some risk. Every contract contains some risk and its a matter of managing that risk.

What does leaders even mean?

The executive? Or the legislative?

What do you mean by facts?

I suppose that map puts leaders as presidents or PMs

I’d like to see more engineers in the Executive branch, not the legislative except for perhaps a consultant group for very technical bills.

I could this have a map like this made up really quickly by just writing something..

I don’t know but I looked it up for switzerland and from the 7 members that make up the executive in switzerland only one has studied law.

So I don’t know what this map shows exactly but I’m always careful to come to conclusions from looking at this sort of thing.

Kinja'd!!! "Spanfeller is a twat" (theaspiringengineer)
12/10/2017 at 10:12, STARS: 0

It makes sense to be careful, specially because governments in Europe tend to be more complex than the presidential system we have in Mexico or in the US. Plus, Switzerland I think has a great system: make every canton give a member to the federal executive branch!

But it remains true that at least in The US and Mexico, leaders tend to be lawyers, I’m not sure this is a good thing because lawyers should be making laws, not necessarily choosing an infrastructure budget. I actually found the original source of the Europe map, its in Reddit (like everything else in the internet) but it did not explain the methodology, or the dating.

Kinja'd!!! "xc90v8/I4 :(" (xc90v8)
12/10/2017 at 10:56, STARS: 0

That’s not exactly how it works in Switzerland but that’s for another time.

I don’t think lawyers should be making laws either. They like laws and won’t stop. Less laws is better in my opinion. Well they probably should be writing them but not decide what sort they make.

Thanks for the link. Here’s a world one I found in the reddit discussion.

I was lied to!

Yes, lawyers like writing complex laws so that more people go to them for assistance, but then, lawyers know how to write loophole-less laws.

If I wrote a simple law, even like “The national speed limit is 120km/h” it would probably have a lot of loopholes and issues, like, is it the speed limit in the sky? or is it the speed limit over a bridge if we decided it was the land speed limit?
