Yup, not sure how to feel about this one. The basic gist is that I feel it just needs way more work than the finished value of the car justifies. If I did this for a job and R+C paid money I’d have no problem sinking time and money into it but this is a hobby funded by my own (And Alex’s) money and we just don’t have endless reserves.

If it had a good body and a bad engine, we’d fix the engine. If it had a bad engine and a good body, we’d fix the engine. But my car has a rusty body and a toasted engine. It looks great in photos but this car is hiding some real demons and I haven’t hid those from the buyer either. I just can’t justify going full hog on a car that will be worth $4k when done while I have a half-finished Corvette in the garage.

I really do love the Corvair and if you’re a Corvair nut, this one is worth saving. He might flake out this Saturday as online buyers are known to do but it could be the end of the road for the R+C Corvair. Sorry guys, we really tried.

Best to cut your losses there. It’s why I’ve decided I’m not going to respray the Cougar. Doing a full color change correctly puts me at an investment I’m not sure is worth it. I know it’s not a forever car for me, so being able to sell it down the road without losing a ton of money is a requirement. The Cougar is cool and it’s fun, but it isn’t my ultimate dream car or anything. For ultimate dream car, I’d go underwater on a “forever” car, but I don’t think one exists for me.

My thoughts exactly, I don’t mind pouring sweat and blood into my Corvette because it’s my all-time dream car. You have to be logical at a certain point. Also I love that Cougar of yours.

It’s better to cut your losses now. You can’t save em all. Plus you got to drive a corvair so that’s a win.

I love the pulley drive system. When I first saw the engine picture, I said, “Hey, that alternator is sideways!”

Getting your money back out of any car is going to be a losing proposition. A brand new car has depreciation and a used car requires maintenance and or restoration. It’s going to cost you any which way you slice it. At least that’s how it’s gone in my own experience.

The Corvair is a fascinating car.

You aren’t obligated to save every car you buy. These are dirt cheap because nobody wants them. The “right now” qualifier could apply to any car. Money pits are only ok if you have an irrational love for a car, and even then you need to admit money is being thrown away. My T/A is a total loss but I don’t care, even if I could get another one. I want to save this one. The corvair is just another car, so let someone else worry about it.

Sad to see it go, but I understand where you are coming from.

Does this mean the aforementioned Bird de la Thunder in the near future?

Sad to see it go, but it is a wise decision. It just doesn’t seem to be worth it, not with the bad engine. It was a pleasure to help you work on it, even though I mostly stood in your way, haha.

By the way, don’t forget to remove the Suburban and Stingray badges (don’t know if the Stingray one is still on it, but Stan did a pretty solid job adding the Suburban badge, haha)
