Even on an ‘03 Passat wagon the 1.8T turns the car from a boring econobox into a tiny rocketship.

It has a bit of lag which actually makes it more fun I think. Pulls surprisingly well - doesn’t feel much slower than the 1.8T’s I’ve driven. But the best part is it sounds way better than you’d expect at this price point.

Maybe a mini-review. I haven’t had enough seat time to really give it a full review but I did wander down some empty desert roads tonight to get a feel for it. Have to turn it in tomorrow. The condensed version is that this feels like a modern EJ Civic: bare bones car with a solid chassis/suspension and good engine that makes you want to do slow car fast things and drive like an idiot all the time.

Is it the 1.4TSi (124bhp) version or the 1.4TSi ACT (148bhp) version?

My Superb is the ACT, even in a car the same size as it’s sister the Passat, it doesn’t struggle for power and can kick up a fair bit of dirt if you want it to.

Ever drive the GM 1.4T in the Cruze or Sonic? How does it compare?

Test drove a Sonic with one and 6 speed manual. Felt torquey but power fell of quickly.

This looks like the North American version, which doesn’t have ACT, and runs on lower octane fuel, but is tuned similarly to the ACT version (torque peak is 100 RPM lower, though, at 1400).

This is the North American version. It’s marketed as just “TSI” but tunes for 150 HP/184 lb-ft, so it sounds like it is similar to the ACT.

Was it ever popular in Europe? I only remember seeing one or two when I was in the UK for a year. I always thought it had more to do with sedans that size not being popular in general outside of luxury marques more than anything else... although the Ford Mondei did seem to sell OK.

The updated suspension and engine really make a big difference. Also, you have to remember just how terrible some of the competition is. Despite being a 7+ year old platform, this thing is so much nicer to drive than a Sentra, Elantra Or Mazda3.

It was, in the 80s I guess. But yes, it’s about compact sedans being very impopular. They’re seen as old people cars. Mondeo is not a compact, so not a competitor. Most are either hatchbacks or wagons though.

It’d make sense that VW would use the BMT name for ACT - after all, ACT is purely a fuel saving technology.

Ye’, the 124bhp/125ps is the non ACT engine while the 148bhp/150ps is the ACT engine under Bluemotion Technology at VW. Both engines are available in the U.K. for the VW Jetta, etc... and Skoda Superb. The European continent gets the Passat with petrol engines including both 1.4TSis, but the U.K. only gets the Passat in diesel form.

Makes sense. Was the Mondeo ever considered a compact? I remember the Mark II that we got in the USA as the Contour being almost Jetta-size while the current one that we get as the Fusion is a boat the size of a Camry.

The 3 is OK. Nothing special. It’s interior sucks just as bad as this Jetta and they handle very similarly. I haven’t driven the Mazda with the 2.5, but between the 2.0 and the VW 1.4T I think the VW engine is more fun and sounds better.

Kinja'd!!! "duurtlang" (duurtlang)
12/08/2017 at 10:30, STARS: 1

No, the Mondeo was never considered a compact. It was always slotted above the cmpact Escort and later Focus. A direct competitor to the midsize VW Passat, not the compact Golf/Jetta. Even in the 90s it had a longer wheel base than the Passat.

Cars have grown quite a bit since the 90s though. You’re correct that the new one is quite the boat. A reason (of many) its popularity is in decline in Europe.

Here’s the US-spec engine choices:

Basically, it boils down to:

1.4T, 150 hp, 184 lb-ft, your choice of 5-speed manual or 6-speed torque converter automatic, in S, Wolfsburg, SE

1.8T, 170 hp, 184 lb-ft, 6-speed torque converter automatic, in SE Sport, SEL

2.0T, 210 hp, 207 lb-ft, 6-speed DSG, in GLI

Note that the only manual is on the base engine, too, now - not even the GLI, even.

For our Superb rough equivalent, the NMS Passat, we get:

A 2.0T making 174 hp, 184 lb-ft, replacing the same 1.8T that the Jetta used (the new 2.0T uses early intake valve closing to improve efficiency), with a 6-speed torque converter automatic.

A 3.6 VR6 making 280 hp, 258 lb-ft, with a 6-speed DSG.

We got the 3.6 in the Mk2, but in a Mk3 in Europe, the car just wouldn’t go down well at all.

Mmm, VR sound.

In the US, the norm for midsize cars ever since they went FWD in the 1980s has been to have a base 4-cylinder somewhere in the ballpark of 2.0 to 2.5 liters, and a premium V6 somewhere in the ballpark of 3.0-3.8 liters. If there’s a hybrid, it’ll be in the ballpark of 2.0-2.5 liters as well.

The Passat’s always been a bit odd - the B3 and B4 largely followed this formula (2.0 I4 base, 2.8 VR6 upgrade, with the B4 also getting a 1.9 TDI), but the B5 went to a 1.8T base, 2.8 V6 upgrade (with a 4.0 W8 upgrade later, and a 2.0 TDI upgrade even later). B6 was 2.0T base, 3.6 VR6 upgrade, and NMS was initially 2.5 I5 base, 2.0 TDI and 3.6 VR6 upgrade, moving to 1.8T base, 3.6 VR6 upgrade, and now 2.0T base, 3.6 VR6 upgrade.

But, the market is shifting - a lot of cases where the V6 is getting replaced with a 2.0T, and the base engine getting replaced with a 1.5-1.6T, here. In some cases, there’ll be two base engines, too - one in the 2.0-2.5 ballpark as a cheap engine, one in the 1.5-1.6T ballpark as a high-torque better EPA rating engine. At this point, Toyota’s the only one staying with NA engines for the whole line.

Here it’s more the emissions thing. The higher the emissions the more you pay annually.

It’s not so much about power this side of the pond as practicality, convenience, fuel economy. 100-200bhp is best, 201-300bhp is getting out there, 301-400 is a bit much, 401+bhp is getting a bit much.

It’ not the power, it’s what you do with it. Lol.

Or

It’s not the size of the ship, it’s the motion of the ocean. Lol.

Kinja'd!!! "bhtooefr" (bhtooefr)

Yeah, whereas here, CO2 emissions don’t matter anywhere near as much, but criteria pollutants do, and our test cycle demands more engine power and has far less legal cheating allowed. Making matters worse, for mainstream products, we demand 87 AKI octane (about 91 RON octane), meaning that high boost doesn’t work well - you need to spray a lot of excess fuel to avoid detonation.

So, extremely tiny downsized engines don’t do as well here (on fuel economy or especially on criteria pollutants), but some manufacturers are trying them anyway (Ford, Kia/Hyundai, GM, and Honda especially).

And, there’s basically an understanding in our market that a base midsize sedan needs to be in the 170-200 hp ballpark, with premium trims having a 250-300 hp option. (Do note that we usually have torque converter automatics sapping some power and responsiveness, and we have terribly-designed infrastructure and drivers that don’t plan ahead.)

Kinja'd!!! "Svend" (svend)
12/08/2017 at 14:53, STARS: 0

Our premium unleaded is 95 octane, and super unleaded is 97/98 octane.

It’s not uncommon to have 1 litre Fiestas and Focuses about (even Mondeo), etc... these cars will still sit at 70+mph on the motorway.

My dad got one new and I’d have to agree. It’s super wimpy until you hit boost- I was crossing an intersection as the light turned yellow the first time I drove it, so I layed on the gas. It felt like nothing til we hit maybe 3500 revs- then I got tossed back. Woah! Admittedly, this was the first time I had driven a boosted car, but I love that stupid tiny engine.
