The final fit on the prototype. Update: its holding on.

Kinja'd!!!

Today I got my hands dirty and actually tested the prototype by placing it on the frame, not only does it almost fit perfectly, but it also seems to be holding up quite well. As the picture shows, the metal derailleur (which has the chain attached wrong on that picture) already dented the plastic hanger.

But it works...

I test rode it around the block and it did fine! I am actually amazed because its holding up quite nicely... the only issue I find is in the lower gears, as the derrailour is hanging dangerously close to the wheel, because its being hung by biodegradable plastic, I can’t seem to trust it when going through rough terrain.

Update: I’m riding nervously, but at least I’m riding.

The bike seems happy, the shifts quick and smooth. Despite going over roads in maintenance the hanger seems to bend very little and it never even scratched the rim

Why not just buy a replacement dropout?

Because the manufacturer doesn’t sell here.

And I ordered a drop out over a month ago from an american website and they seem to be ignoring me despite paying 40 bucks plus shipping over a month ago. I don’t have the hanger yet.

I honestly can’t understand why its so fucking hard to get a hanger. its very dumb

As someone who has straightened waaay too many dropouts, I feel like this is a good solution as long you’re not thrashing it and a literal bag of these in your bag. I personally like metal hangers, as they can take a hit if you’re in a place with a derailleur hanger aligner but without spare hangers (kinda like race support, esp with mtb/rd events) .... I also detest the disturbing reality within bikes that range from 3000 dollars to 100 dollar bikes that have bent derailleur hangers out of the box.

It’s also dependent on how well your frame was actually made, as I have fond memories of poorly milled dropouts that made adjustment nearly impossible. some things....but kudos to you!

Don’t keep riding it with the PLA hanger on there. It will break off eventually and there’s a risk of the derailleur getting caught in the spokes and causing even more damage.

I got the original web page from Oppo.

I don’t think its their fault, its probably the Mexican IRS trying to squeeze as much money out of people as possible. So, despite the piece being American made (thus, inside NAFTA) and purchased and imported legally, they’ll probably want me to pay a tariff.

However, I don’t know where the fuck the piece is, let alone if it’s in Mexico because USPS did not contact me at any moment, I asked the webpage for help, but they seem to ignore me.

this is a prototype, but I will be riding it today for 7 miles to find its weaknesses. I don’t think it will shear off at any moment, but it could bend out of shape permanently (Specially if I change gears like a maniac)

Yes, I have a piece of tape holding the derailleur back, I don’t even want to know how much a new shimano slx is!

I’m assuming you’ve got a cad file of some type since you printed the pla part. I’d just give the file to someone with a cnc machine. USPS is garbage.

Yes, but finding someone with a cnc cutter isn’t exactly easy ehre

Can you use 3Dhubs to have it printed in metal? I’ve had pla bike parts break from a shock (like unexpectedly coming down off a curb) and they break catastrophically. In the meantime, you might consider using Nylon or at least ABS. At worst, you could pop your part in the oven to anneal it.

I wouldn’t trust PLA with ma hubs, I’m 6'2" and I weigh about 220 pounds, even the fancy steel ones I have started bending after a couple of years.

I could trust those other materials for parts that have less shock, for instance, the PLA hanger, Its not a great choice for this bike, I have way to many gears at back and the SLX is far too heavy for it to be supported by the PLA anyway, where it a race circuit bike, I certainly see an argument for PLA or even Carbon Fibre filament, if your printer can handle it.

That’s surprising since you’ve got a 3d printer. Figured you would know people who make things.

Use your printer to make another, then use that to make a negative in casting sand. Pour molten iron into the cast.

You could try printing it out of ABS or nylon to make it more durable.

Sorry no. I reside in the great North aka Minnesota where there is barely any snow WTF! I can mail though and I enjoy challenges. Like I can see if I can make it and won’t charge anything to do it. It would be nice to have a break from the monotony.
