Me:

1. Roll start down a long driveway.

2. Manual push start in Kmart parking lot and pushed car over foot.

3. Hooked up janky AF inline heater hose heater in a half assed attempt to warm up motor.

4. Jumped starter with a screwdriver.

5. Had friend push start me from behind with his Monty Carlo pushing in my bumper.

Repeatedly whack the starter with a hammer in front of a supermarket while the car was dead in the fire lane.

It eventually started after it felt like doing so. Turns out my remote starter’s hood-open disengage wasn’t hooked up right and messed up Literally Everything™.

“The Miata had other plans. After at least ten failed attempts at starting the car, I did something I hope to never do again. In darkness, with nothing but the stars to see by, I muscled my car onto the narrow road and attempted a push start. There’s a very unique terror found in piloting a non-powered automobile down a road you can’t see, in utter silence. I knew there was a drop-off on my left side and a wall of trees on my right, but without enough juice to power the headlights I was relying solely on my recollection of the last time I’d driven down the road. Pushing from the driver side, I hopped into the seat, shifted into 2nd and started mashing the clutch with my right foot while simultaneously pushing off against the road with my left. My foot slid along gravel. The road had turned without my consent, and I’d continued straight, piloting my car into the runoff right before the cliff face. Unease gave way to panic.”

A/C Compressor on my Xterra locked up in a gas station. Truck wouldn’t crank over so I cut the belt off (which also ran the supercharger) and drove it home N/A and slow as hell.

Didn’t have booster cables so I used a bunch of speaker wire to jumpstart my ‘92 Pontiac Sunbird V6 back when I was in high school.

Speaker wire jumper cables qualify as dangerous and Janky AF.

Indeed. I’ve push started many cars since then, and I firmly believe that it is a huge reason to go manual. And so much faster than a jump! Plus, if you push start a car in front of someone who knows nothing about cars, they look at you like you’re a freaking God

(I’ve tried to do that screwdriver on the starter thing, but the sparks always made me flinch.)

The craziest start-up I’ve actually done was totally unnecessary: There’s a big hill out by Traverse City that sends you downhill towards town in a straight line for about a mile, uninterrupted by traffic lights or stop signs.

I was driving a ’94 Cougar (automatic) at the time, and discovered that I could coast for that entire mile without losing any speed. So I started doing it in neutral, and one time, just for fun, I decided to do it with the engine off. I kept the steering column unlocked, but this time both the steering and brakes were un-powered.

Nothing came of it. I didn’t have to stop or swerve for anything. I just started the engine back up and shifted into gear when I started to lose speed towards the bottom of the hill, and continued on my way. Haven’t done it since, though.

I needed to jump start my van and I had it on ramps and couldn’t get the truck close enough for the (cheap) jumper cables to reach, so I cut the cables in half and spliced some spare home wiring in between :)

Worked perfect.

I once tore out the radio wires on my ‘66 GMC so I could hotwire it. The ignition tumbler shit the bed while I was getting lunch in between teaching classes.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I took a video so I could teach my students how to hotwire an old vehicle.

Silliest, my dad, many eons ago, was helping start my CRX, by pushing it with his Crown Vic. We got rolling down the street and I dropped the clutch, no start, but my dad wasn’t paying attention and plowed into me. No damage to the CV, but the rear bumper was pretty jacked up on the Honda. Poor little car. The rear end was a target, eventually got rear ended later on while I was at a stop, waiting for customs heading into Canada. Lady hit me at about 40 mph. The Honda was still driveable, but just barely. And that was the end of that little car.

Worst idea for starting a motorcycle? Having my buddy tow me behind his truck while I popped the clutch on it. Didn’t work. I never did get the old POS bike to run.

Never tried it personally, but when my employer did a project relating to earthmoving equipment we found the electrical specs required tolerance of massive noise and overvoltage on the 24V supply, because construction workers apparently think it’s reasonable to jump start a bulldozer using an arc welder.

Also, after a friend of mine rebuilt his engine and apparently bent the crank a little, we got it going by hooking it to a 4WD, putting it in gear and dragging it with the rear wheels locked, then speeding up till they started to rotate, and going up and down the road like that till we’d worn the crank bearings enough through dry running that it would start and keep going. No, it wasn’t a car he valued much...

Dammit. Suspense ruined. He could be lying though.... Guess you’ll just have to follow the link and see...

Come to think of it I can’t remember if I ever figured out WHY the car died. Huh... That’s worrying.

It barely worked. It only cranked it just enough for the motor to catch.

Push-started an automatic AMC Concord. It worked, but the car sorta squatted and jerked sideways a bit in protest. I refused to be in the pushee, so my buddy had me push him with his Jeepster. I didn’t know you could push-start an automatic. Still wouldn’t do it to a car I cared about.

Started the Toyota at -48c without plugging it in.. the little 22re got one cylinder to fire and eventually brought the other three online. It was rough and I bet I cut 10 years off it’s life but I was outta there.

Too late to add: we had to get it up to about 35mph before I dropped away for it to work. Any slower and the torque converter sapped too much of the force.

i learned a while ago that you can pullstart a car, not pull it with another car but literally pullstart it like a lawnmower. it was a last resort as no jump leads or other people around.

used a rock to beat the starter into submission

pushed started an auto focus in the dark on a unlit part of the motorway

used a 125cc motorbike to tow a mk1 ford fiesta to bump start it

bump started the same fiesta in reverse, on a one lane road in devon, the road was barely big enough for the fiesta.

used a citroen ax to push start a loaded ford transit (us oppo the ax it a tiny shit box with the strength of a soggy paper bag and the hp of a dead cat)

jump started the pos citroen ax with speaker cable ripped from the doors

1. Did on a short driveway

2. Same in Walmart parking lot. No foot run over.

3. Nope but did temporarily bypass a heater core that was leaking

4. Yup

5. Nope

6. Was riding with a guy who turned off his Jeep while going 30-35 and then popped the clutch to start it back. Why? Because he liked to

7. Witnessed, several times, trucks push starting other trucks with bad starters/batteries

I’m pretty sure I ruined an engine by starting it at -20 F. It dropped a valve seat, that holed a piston.
