Kinja'd!!!

Following up from my previous post on the subject, I got an IDE to Compact Flash adapter and an appropriate fixed-disk CF card. This evening I put it all together.

Windows 95 is currently installing, the only snag I’ve really had is as follows: the boot disk (because you have to boot off a floppy to load the CD drivers to install windows) would whine about needing to format the drive, then act like everything was fine until windows couldn’t write to the disk. After scratching my head for a while and poking around via DOS I realized the CF card came formatted (duh) and it certainly wasn’t a valid partition for windows. A little bit of fdisk solved that! Hopefully this works out...

The beige is strong with this one.

I remember my grandmother had a Windows 98 computer in 2008. That’s right, 2008. It was so god-awfully slow but somehow it could emulate like no other.

format the drive with the 95 floppy, then copy the CD-ROM’s WIN95 directory to C:\WIN95 and install from there

saves a SHITLOAD of time during install and driver installation

I had some driver trouble shortly after I posted this, and re-installed everything last night. It’s all working well now. The tip about copying the CD’s content to the hard drive would have saved a lot of back-and-forth with the CDs when doing drivers, though!

It’s the same OEM disk that came with the computer, so B (disk labelled “With USB support”). The CF card is 8GB to match the original HDD, but I’ve discovered it only partitioned 2gb of it so that’s something to look in to.

ah, should try using a 98SE boot disk to fdisk next time

but find something like partition magic 8.0 and it should let you use all of the drive
