If you already know you plan to exceed the mileage allowance, can you work out a deal with the owner beforehand to expand the limit? It seems like the per mile cost of going over is meant for missing by a bit, rather than adding hundreds more. I want to do a mini road trip and I’m hoping I can fairly compensate the owner for an extension but not be charged for basically extra days I don’t have the car.

You can try but I doubt the owners will budge. Many Turo owners are stingy with mileage. Overages are where they make money if the car has a 200 mile limit. And I think its owners discretion as to how much they can charge on mileage overages. I saw the other day a guy that had a 300 mile limit on his car and it was $1.92 a mile if you go over.

Ouch. The one I want is $1 per mile, but it’s equivalent to his mileage limit and daily rate such that the extra mileage I want equals like 2 extra days.

Its not worth it then. Honestly I would just try to find something you would want to drive from someone that’s offering unlimited miles, or at least 500 and up.

Mehh... it’s a manual C7 Corvette which I will basically be test driving. I guess I’ll just ask and see what the guy says. Are the ones with good reviews really still stingy?

Yea it doesnt hurt to try. But not really. The good ones are usually good across the board.

Wouldn’t hurt to try, the guy we rented from gave us a free 75-mile extension because we asked nicely but like LJ909 said most people with high-end cars like a Corvette use Turo as a business so they’ll be looking to make as much money back as possible.

It very much depends on the owner, but yes they definitely have the option to allow you to pay a special rate agreed upon ahead of time. But generally the mileage limit is why the price can be affordably low. It makes sense to limit the car to 100 miles a day when it’s a relatively expensive car being rented for like $60 a day. However, in general I’ve found that Turo is not a good option for long distance travel. I spend A LOT of time when looking at turo cars struggling with finding one with enough mileage to meet my needs. Don’t bother trying to negotiate mileage cost though unless you are really set on a particular car.

Just book it for more days. It’s often cheaper than paying for more miles individually. I know I rented a C7 on Turo in LA that included 200 miles a day. With 4 days of rental, 800 miles was overkill for what I needed. I drove down to San Diego and around orange County, added about 600 miles in total. But I avoid all 100 miles a day cars at all costs.

You responded to my other responses, but yes it is a special car choice. It’s 150mi per day at $145 per day so you do actually get 5mi more per day than the $1/mi rate. It gets interesting though when the delivery is $80 for under 3 days. Just going from 2 days to 3 saves $85 for my intended total mileage.

I would like to do a 3rd day, but then that adds another hotel night which easily negates the savings.... my brain hurts.

You could certainly negotiate paying for 3 days but returning it early. The guy gets the same money either way so I doubt that would be a problem. That seems pricey depending on your area. I know I paid about $115 a day including all of the fees/insurance at 200 miles per day. Keep in mind that if its $145 a day base rate, then its going to be closer to $180 a day once you include the other crap.

Just to follow up to this, he agreed to pro-rate 200 miles at $0.75/mi like the rental companies do which saves me $50. So I got that going for me.... which is nice.
