Got a bill from the HOA yesterday for not paying them their fees this month and last. They were very cross with me. Then my wife called them and said “um we sold that place 2 months ago. We talked about this on the phone and in emails. You were listed on closing documents and we paid you a trasnfer fee.”
Oh yes well...have a nice day you can disregard your bill. thank you. Also the Onion...oh man the onion.

HOAs are fine until they’re populated with busybodies who try and dictate mundane things. Like what you can park in your driveway or what types of plants you’re allowed to grow.

This indeed. Some restrictions re: sightliness are worthwhile (i.e. no, you can’t build a free-standing shed in your townhome’s front yard...), but sometimes it’s just too much. Like the time I got a notice for not having enough plants in my front yard, while the house across the street’s yard is simply moss-over-dirt. It’s mainly inconsistency that’s the problem.

there is a family owned place with an hoa that sent my mom and her sisters a nasty letter claiming the tree in the front yard was dead and it had to be removed. THEY ARE IN CHARGE OF YARD CARE!

Yeah, sometimes they’re just insane. And people wonder why no one takes their HOAs seriously, or why HOAs regularly lose in court because they can’t be arsed to abide by their own damn regulations. Our HOA says that you can’t run a business out of their home, yet when you look at my neighborhood on Google Maps, there are no less than two actual businesses located in the subdivision. Someone’s clearly asleep at the wheel, nevermind that such a restriction would likely be an illegal restraint anyway.

I’m okay with HOAs for some stuff, like no couches or rusted out trucks on your lawn (driveway I’m okay with). I really think that all the HOA from hell stories we hear are the few, like less than 10%, that have been taken over by that bitch Cathy who lives on the corner who wants all the houses to be 50 Shades of Beige.
