Let me set this straight, right off the bat: I never played Pokemon as a ‘kid’. Never watched the shows, never collected the cards, didn’t play ANY of the games...

I only started playing Go because it seemed immensely popular when it came out, was free, and gave me something to do when I was bored, and with my kids that were KINDA getting into Pokemon.

Also one of my guilty pleasures is watching grown men with dirty minds and mouths play Minecraft, and they did a couple Pixelmon series, where there are Pokemon elements in a Minecraft world. I suggest looking it up, its quite entertaining.

Kinja'd!!!

So back in JANUARY I caught this fucker. Hadn’t seen one before, and as it turns out, I would see one again for NEARLY A YEAR.

Kinja'd!!!

Until I saw a little yellow-brown turd on my screen after parking in the lot to pick up my daughter from dance class.

Nearly. A. Year.

Why does this bother me so much? Was it the two Sandslash raids I missed out on by mere MINUTES last week? Was it because its the favorite ‘Mon of one of the YouTuber dudes I watched?

I dunno. I’m just happy as all shit to finally see another one. And once I evolve my Onix into a Steelix (5 more candies, dammit I need more Rare Candy drops from raids!) I’m walking with the Sandshitter until I have 23 more candy so I can get the Sandslash I always wanted.

For some reason.

What keeps you coming back to Go?

I lost all interest after 2 weeks.

There’s a lot left to find, a lot of entries in the ‘dex I want to fill for completionists sake, and they keep adding new stuff slowly.

Plus its not a demanding game. I leave it running when I go places to hatch eggs and get buddy candy, hoping I get new dudes/dudettes, if I am bored somewhere waiting I’ll load it up, see of there any stops nearby or gyms to battle/place my Pokemon in...

It just a good time killer, providing you’re killing time near a stop, gym, or are walking/riding/driving slow enough to click off kilometers for eggs/candy.

It depends on when you started/stopped playing, but there’s a LOT more in the game now than there was at launch, or even six months after launch.

I’m level 34, it’s pathetic. My kid says it’s the most embarrassing thing ever. I’m in San Diego and Sandshrew is everywhere...

As we chatted about before, I picked up Ingress to play while shuttling the kiddos around to play PoGo.

We’ve done some pretty cool stuff and had a few really nail-biting moments, but a recent PoGo convert has really screwed up the local balance . Most people play on the way to or from work, at lunch, some evenings, and over the weekends. There are the occasional late-night actions, but those usually don’t happen during the week and certainly don’t happen every weekend.

There are exceptions to this. A couple of players hit portals throughout the day, but not continuously. One’s an emergency services supervisor, so he hits portals along his route. The other delivers court documents all around town, so you never know where he will pop up, but again, it’s not continuous action.

This new guy is a grad student who is supposed to be working on his thesis. He lives with his parents, so he doesn’t have to hold down a job. Instead, he plays Ingress from late morning to early morning every day of the week. Seriously, he starts around 11:00 am and plays continuously until 2 or 3:00 am. There’s not a single player in our area that puts in so much time or effort. He has played so much in the last couple of months that he now outranks me even though I’ve been playing for over a year.

Despite all that, he still can’t beat our team. It takes eight of us, but working together keeps our team at the top of the scoreboard for our region.

If you ever get bored with PoGo, give Ingress a shot.

I hit 31 recently. My girls tolerate me, but they’re way more casual than I am at it, and I’m pretty casual.

I hate the regional bullshit though. I shouldn’t have to travel across the state or the country to catch certain Pokemon.

Or to the other side of the world for a Goddamn Mr. Mime.

My wife and I, both around 50 years old, play more than our kids (12 and 15). I have lost count of how many Sandshrews I’ve seen. But my kingdom for a Pineco.

Are you saying it’s pathetically low or pathetically high? ;)

I just hit 35. We’re in the same boat.

The thing I’ve learned about this game is waiting fixes everything. I used to bust my ass for the ghost Pokemon and Abras, trying to get to the final evolution. Now I’ve got multiple of each. Special events plus regular playing will get you anything if you wait long enough.

You ain’t wrong. I was just lamenting that there aren’t specific Pokemon that spawn in regions like in the games, and today they increase spawns during certain types of weather. Its a start.
