Kinja'd!!!

It strikes me that all politics aside, if we think the government is not looking at our online stuff whenever they feel like it, then we are deluding ourselves.

Think before you post. For many, it’s already too late.

Our government also wants carte blanche to spy on us. The FBI is furious that Apple and Google won’t put back doors into our phones for them.

And still a “most favored trading partner” as our (west coast anyway) real estate markets are roiled by sketchy money from that market. Depressing.

Some out there are probably using it as a guidebook (as I think some have used Orwell’s ideas).

It’s almost as if, hmm, we shouldn’t trust the government? What a strange concept, I thought modern life was just peachy and all those history books were just fairy tales!/s

I wonder if china will have a revolution at some point. I will admit an authoritarian government can be a benefit in geopolitics but that doesn’t mean a damn thing if you are worried about being taken to the gulag for a tweet.

Mr. “I want to pardon drug cartel chiefs” here in Mexico also wants to give the CISEN more powers than they already have (which are plentiful)

Living in a communist country (Vietnam) during the birth of the “Patriot” act, I was under no illusions as to its nature. It represents the wholesale surrender of the American people to fear.

Damn. My little brother (and his wife and son) are in Shanghai, and while I want to talk to him about things like this, I wonder if it’s safer just not to bring it up...

It won’t be long before they are watching our every move (when we’re outside).

My supervisor was in command in Iraq. He confirmed that the technology is real and that they used it as described in the bloomberg article.

What I find curious about it is that the state is putting the resources on it. Probably, there are computers running filters and just flagging any content that meets certain parameters, and then a human examines it further.

I think I could agree with your statement without agreeing whether or not the act is a good idea.

I think you could ask him about what’s going on and how people are feeling and if he isn’t disrespectful or mocking, then he probably wouldn’t raise any flags.

Besides, I think they are more concerned with keeping the populace in line.

But staying completely clear of anything political, it sounds like, would be a good practice.

I’ve brought things up with him before - it’s just crazy that I even have to consider that having a conversation like this could be dangerous... (his wife is Chinese).

Very thankful to live in a place where we are free to express ourselves. I fear for how things will end up for the citizens of Hong Kong; they’ve had much more freedom in the past, but there are more and more stories of crackdowns on those who dissent.

I suspect that’s exactly what happens. Plenty of labor to do the job, and everyone wants to appease the party/big brother - you’ll never succeed if you don’t.
