Good. I don’t care that there are worse allegations for others, or that only one party is taking action, abusers should always be pressured to step down from positions of power everywhere. Some will respond to that pressure and some won’t, that doesn’t make the pressure any less righteous. yeah, that’s a loaded word, but I think it fits. Justice, so far as it exists in society(and all the smaller scales), shouldn’t be administered or legislated by people who have already proven to take advantage.

It’s a bit of a rant, but seeing democrat partisans attempt to justify keeping him in power (in both the comments and social media) has me rankled. This is a low fucking bar to clear for “purity”.

HOLY SHIT! Al Franken used to be a comedian?

dating from when he was still working as a comedian to the beginnings of his political career,

I read somewhere the suggestion that Franken should resign on the condition that Moore does so too. I like that idea, but I suppose it’s too late. He’d be able to do one last good thing and take that asshole down with him.

I’m guessing pretty much anybody that is male should probably just quit their job now. They probably did something at some point in time that would justify it.

I didn’t suggest they can’t work, just not hold positions of power if they have a history of abusing that authority. plenty of powerless positions out there. I don’t see a problem with making sure that someone who can’t stop from harassing someone has trouble managing an applebee’s much less a US senator.

Considering most of his performance career was before the mid ‘90s, some younger oppos may not have ever seen his stuff. I knew he used to be a comedian, but I’ve never actually watch any of his stuff myself.

I, of all people, am aware that there is some irony in the fact that I am leaving while a man who has bragged on tape about his history of sexual assault sits in the Oval Office and a man who has repeatedly preyed on young girls campaigns for the Senate with the full support of his party.

That right there says a lot.

A hazard of being old, I guess. I still think of Franken as a comedian, and find it hard to believe he’s in politics. He was on SNL a long time-

From proven/verifiable/admitted cases of assault, I completely agree. It’s a slippery slope, though. Like all crimes, there are also cases of false accusations. Firing/resignations from accusations just opens it up to all sorts of corruption opportunities.

Real question is, will he go back to being a comedian or will he become a ridiculously-highly-paid lobbyist like every other ex-politician?

Talking head on one of the news channels is my bet — if he’s too toxic for that, he’ll be a ‘consultant’.

Yeah, I don’t see him getting any job in the public eye, but he’s got enough connections at this point to be a mover & shaker (I hate that ex-politicians are allowed to be lobbyists... - creates a vicious cycle of representatives beholden to special interests instead of their constituents).

I think at least making some kind of noise like that would be good. The Republicans are not cleaning house. They should. Moore should withdraw. It won’t stop him from apologizing.

But thinking about it... Having his taint in the senate is probably just as bad for him as it would be if his democrat opponent wins the “reddest state” in America.

LOL, I started watching SNL back in the first year or two it was on TV, and Franken would show up occasionally with his partner Tom Davis.

I still find it very hard to believe that the guy is a politician, myself...

I was just thinking today of how the republican party to me seems like a bunch of old grey haired white men. And I’ve seen photographic evidence of this. This article provides the numbers and they aren’t surprising and I hadn’t looked it up for precisely that reason, I knew with certainty that I was right. There are only 5 women. This needs to change so badly at all levels of everything. We currently are not anything close to what I’d consider a representative democracy.

It’s probably also what’s allowing the republican party to sweep sexual misconduct under the rug, I can’t believe what’s going on. This article provided some interesting examples. On top of that we have the R’s not even sweeping Roy under the rug, they are just like “meh, it’s too late to present another candidate, so hopefully he can still get himself elected”. I really hope that Alabamans see that as an insult, because it is. The republican party is essentially saying: “eh... you are Alabama, you’ll still elect this pedophile”. It sounds soooooo insane and yet it’s true.

I truly, truly hope that if Moore wins the election, he’s immediately brought before the ethics committee and removed. I’d like to think there are enough principled Republicans to do this (as they stated they would), but these last couple years have been full of great disappointments...

Trump’s election was pretty much the death knell for a desperate, dying party. Moore’s election (if he’s allowed to stay) would be the final nail in the coffin.

The above statement assumes there is at least some decent number of good, sane, rational people in this country. I hope I’m not proven that this is false, and hope for a strong, centrist party to somehow rise from the void (wishful thinking?).

I would love a centrist party. I think center needs to be the new right, shifting the center to the left, it would just better represent this country, I think. Especially the newer/younger generations.

The current republican party is (attempting) to pass legislation without the democratic party input. What’s going to happen after Trump’s term in office when very likely the pendulum swings the other way again? They’ll try to undo as much as possible, much like Trump is trying to dismantle anything that has the name Obama attached to it.

If we, like McCain has suggested, create legislation that has (at least some) agreement on both sides of the aisle, I think we’d have a much improved functioning country. Quite frankly, our system of government as it is currently “functioning” is a fucking shitshow and an embarrassment. It may technically follow the constitution, but in reality I bet it’s far from how the framers intended it to function.

It’s so messed up. With the country more and more polarized, it’s becoming harder and harder for those near the center to win their primary elections, and we end up with what we’ve got. Less than 20% of our total citizenry cast a vote for Trump (still far, far too many in my mind) and he currently has a 32% approval and 63% disapproval rating. The only hopeful thing from all this, in my mind, is that more young people will get politically active and vote in their local, state & federal elections. Hopefully they’ve tasted the bitter pill of non-involvement and won’t make the mistake again (despite how easy it is to be disillusioned by it all).
