Backed the CX-5 into a Dodge Ram today. Thankfully, the Ram owner wasn’t concerned because his truck is old and has plenty of dents not caused by me. I couldn’t tell any damage I did to the Dodge but the CX-5 will need a new rear bumper. Again.

The bumper was replaced early last summer when my wife was rear ended by a Camry. Now, it’ll have to be replaced again. And our insurance has a $500.00 deductible so we will be paying this all out of pocket. Sigh.

Sometimes, when I fix something and it breaks again.... I feel like universe is telling me THAT thing should be broken.

If you left your wife’s bumper on, this damage wouldn’t be an issue to you.

Don’t fix it. Save money. Get an “Under Construction” sticker and put it next to the hole

The paint might be salvageable with a good polish. To be honest that cut in the plastic cladding is not worth replacing the whole thing at this point in time, I would definitely wait.

I was trying to look online and see if that plastic cladding can be bought separately. If it can, I’d fix it myself.

The paint scuffs look really shallow, and may well buff out. That just leaves the black plastic to be replaced. Sucks, but no biggie.

It’s your money, but I wouldn’t fix it for that kind of ding in the plastic cladding. Two of our cars have small dings in the rear bumpers from unknown sources (hit and run, I guess) and there’s no way I’m replacing a whole bumper for that. But then, our cars are older - ‘07 and ‘03...

As long as there’s no structural damage, I see no reason to pay to replace that bumper. If I had to pay out of pocket, I’d just keep it as is.

I slammed my M3 into my garage wall 2 weeks after I got it, luckily the garage was the only thing that got damaged.

Yup can be bough separate.

I work in a body shop. I’d recommend taking it in to a body shop. They’re very delicate and the breaking clips gets expensive quick. To swap bumpers they shouldn’t charge too much. no more than 3 or 4 hours max and most should do it cheaper for cash.

Just checked, the lower textured portion is part of the cover :(

Looks like OEM replacement will run about $730 pending labor rates in your area.

Yeah I found that to be true as well. Gag. $730? Good grief.

The worst part is, at a $500 deductible, they’re only paying 1/3 of the repair cost. How much will they raise rates? If it’s $15/month (random number for sake of conversation), you break even in a little over a year. Another fun consideration is “Good Driver” discounts, or clean record, etc. Sometimes it’s not worth filing a claim and losing that discount (if you’re currently getting one).

Almost makes you want to polish the scuff on the paint, and live with the gouge in the textured section :P

My neighbor did the same thing this week in her bug. Honest, id just live with it until you can get a replacement off ebay or go to sell the car.

Just make an ebay save search for mazda cx5 rear bumper blue and set a budget.

If you do replace it, don’t file a claim. Pay for it out of pocket. I say protect your insurance rates/standing whenever you can.

I personally don’t agree with those telling you to not replace it... I had a perfectly serviceable bumper myself but I couldn’t stand looking at it, so I know your pain.

That’s what the bumper is for. I would just train myself to never look at the area on the car.

As a San Francisco resident, the thought of replacing a bumper because of that makes me cry-laugh

Joking aside, it doesn’t look bad at all! Definitely wouldn’t spend $500 on that. Better put towards the kid’s college fund or something.

I remember when I was learning to drive, bumpers were for...well... bumping. It’s sad that nowadays, bumpers are piano finish made out of brittle things and cost an arm and a leg. Who wants to use those for... bumpers?

The raw textured plastic they use on bumpers and wheel opening trim has to be the most delicate material on your car.

They come shipped fully covered in foam in a box and still usually have damaged. Plus it always fades.

The piano black trim Ford uses almost as bad.

Especially going into winter. And not to mention it’s just a plastic trim part. No need to worry about that one till you sell it, or it gets hit again.

3 months after buying the FiST, I backed it into a tree. Still haven’t fixed it, but somehow it’s barely noticeable.

Yeah. If this was her old car (an ‘06 Malibu), neither of us would bother with fixing it. But the CX-5 is only four-years-old. It’s paid off, and we plan on keeping it a long, long time. So, we’d both like to keep it looking as nice as possible for as long as possible.

I found a local guy (a son of my coworker) that does bodywork on the side and he thinks he can fix it for $150-$200.
