I’m not going to debate your statement, but I’d like to critique the song and say it just sounded generic. Nothing stood out to me about the lyrics. The flow of the song, the instrumental, it just sounds like other songs I’d listened to 10 years ago.

I know nothing of Machine Gun Kelly. This is the first and only time I’ve heard one of his songs. The slow, deliberate delivery, the self serious scowling, and yes, the hairdo all feels like a cheap imitation of Lose Yourself, except talking about nothing in particular.

I’m not a big fan of drawing comparisons between similar artists, so I won’t bring up Eminem or Atmosphere; I’ll judge this song on its own merits.
Also, I’ve never heard a song by MGK before now.
An important component of good rap and hip hop is the use of metaphor and simile. While his lyrics have a rawness, they’re not engaging at all. I don’t deny the man his personal struggles, real or imagined, but the lyrics come across as bad slam poetry set to a weak boom-clap beat.
Not only is the content weak, but there’s just not much of it. Most of the song is repeated chorus. There is no density to his lyrics, and he only songs two verses in a 4 minute song.
As for his rap style, he sounds like he could be good if he had better material. Can you suggest some songs that might showcase his skills better? I feel like this is just a really bad song.

I haven’t heard a lot of his stuff but it hasn’t resonated so far... Danny Brown, Kendrick Lamar, Action Bronson, Schoolboy Q all stick with me way more. I don’t know, there’s a lot of good stuff out there. Even Ab Soul or Tyler the Creator has some good stuff that stands up to MGK. He’s a little more soul/r&b but chance the rapper has something that resonates.
I guess I’m saying, I’m no MGK authority, but it’s because what I’ve heard hasn’t made me want to be but everyone I’ve listed above, I’ve like more.

I would suggest the exact opposite: that anyone who thinks he IS a good lyricist—much less among the best—must not have heard much hip-hop outside top 40 radio. However, we can all agree he’s better than, like, Drake, and as I said initially, a better pure spitter than a lot of superior lyricists.
