I’d be interested to see y’all’s results on this political compass test. It’s composed mostly of philosophical questions rather than policy issues, and it’s probably the best I’ve come across, and the website it’s on has some pretty interesting, albeit out-there, literature on it as well. Check it out here .

I’ve had a few beers, but I can’t even figure out how to take it. At first there’s a few cards at the bottom and I’m like “guess I click the one I most agree with?” then it takes me to another page that clearly isn’t a quiz.

Sounds reasonably accurate. I didn’t like the wording of some of the questions, and some specifically should have been broken up into multiple questions with the various add-ons and qualifiers within.

I prefer “state-skeptical social democrat” but “liberal” pretty much covers it. I answered a lot of the questions with “neutral” as I didn’t agree with their premises. I can never get on board with the habit, shared by both the radical left and the anarcho-capitalist sort of libertarian, of making every political question into some Kantian categorical imperative. Encouraging profit-driven market economies within a minimally-invasive regulated framework that prevents counterproductive abuses? Unthinkable. It’s always Rothbard or Marx, little middle ground.

Terminology counts here. There’s a hell of a difference between “prosecuted” and “convicted”. When we’re talking about a right that probably involves violence, it’s not totally insane to suggest your peers (12 of them in this case) should get to judge whether you were within the limits of the right in question.
On the other hand, the question postulates that you were inside boundaries, so you shouldn’t wind up being punished...
(Yes, I spekd as liberal. And no, I’m not dumb enough to believe “just exercising your rights” necessarily leads to “not guilty verdict” in the real world).

I came in as a Georgist on my first run and mutualist on my second (adjusting the handful I couldn’t correctly answer positively or negatively due to internal contractions).
Apparently my views are vaguely anarcho-communist, although I’ve always defined myself as a small-L libertarian. I am exceptionally socially liberal, extremely conservative regarding the power given to government (primarily stewardship of the commons), and an almost absolute isolationist/anti-interventionist.

The questions are nearly all fundamentally libertarian, if not anarchist, in structure. Many of them are nearly meaningless because they are compound, combining two separate propositions that might be related by type or concept but are not necessarily mutually dependent, so you can’t agree with one without agreeing with the other, forcing you to adopt a neutral or opposed position, which strongly colors the score. Essentially if you think that the government should provide any services at all, any regulation at all, and pay for it by levying any taxes at all, you’re some form of big-government liberal who favors tons of regulation and high taxation. Which is weird, because I’ve never met anyone who favors the existence of government who doesn’t think it should levy at least some taxes, provide at least some services, and impose at least some regulations. Apparently I favor government regulation of culture because I said parents should fear punishment if they abuse their children? Despite that, the overall result—liberal, presumably in the classical sense—is generally right.

There was an awful lot of begging the question in there, where the statement you’re supposed to agree or disagree with looks, on the face of it, to be a “universal, philosophical” assertion but is obviously a position on a local (U.S., year 2017) current issue.
And a lot of my responses would have been toward the low end of a perpendicular axis running from “Well, that’s obviously true” down to “You’ve got to be kidding me, who do you think you’re talking to, an idiot?”

I definitely don’t trust “the state” enough to be a progressive, central-planning, social-engineering liberal against freedom and liberty.
I don’t trust self-righteous people to be conservative enough to think that the culture can be controlled without consequence and conflict.
The only recourse is a federalist system of checks and balances against. infringement of individual liberties, and leaving people to their mutual self interest, under a framework of basic, fundamental, agreed-upon law and order, self defense against violent crime, and national defense against militaristic, or other forms of invasion.
