Kinja'd!!!

Hah, just kidding. I can’t tell you much about them. But I did sit in one for 3 minutes on the dealer floor. Here are my thoughts:

Kinja'd!!!

The ceiling is... shockingly low. I’m 5'11" and my hair is close to hitting the headliner. And yes I put the power seat all the way down. There is less headroom than the Taco, maybe because the 4Runner has a moonroof? Anyway. It’s a huge car, but not as big as you’d think on interior space.

Seats are firm and comfy. It’s a nice car... The wheels are... [winces]... and scream “mall crawler.”

Kinja'd!!!

Everything I care about are operated by buttons and knobs, a plus for me but I’m not sure someone who’s cross-shopping bigly New SUVs would be impressed.

Kinja'd!!!

It’s 2017 and the heated and cooled seats are operated by a single dial per seat. It’s typical Toyota: modern technology operated by a 90s knob, button, or dial. I would love this in any car. But definitely doesn’t feel up to date.

Kinja'd!!!

It does still have the TRUCK feel which I enjoy. But the outside looks like something you’d see in a Bellevue shopping center parking lot. Running boards are a nuisance. They don’t stick out far enough to use and rob even more ground clearance. And this truck isn’t even that high. No one over 5'2" would need to use them.

Conclusion: I can’t afford one.

Thank you.

I don’t think jkm is ever going back to VAGCOM.

The loaded 4Runner is one of those cars I’d just never buy. For that price, if I really wanted to go offroad and have leather seats, I’d buy a loaded Wrangler. Otherwise I’d get an actual luxury vehicle like a GLC. And if I was hell bent on having both, I’d get a used 200-Series.

When we bought the Taco the sales rep tried to get us into a Limited- leather seats, premium sound, super fancy radar thingies.. I was already paying for the fake hood scoop- the big chrome wheels were too much.

Dunno, probably not. I have a feeling I probably didn’t help with pissing him off at one point (constant questioning about why someone has a box of ammo sitting in their truck), but he hasn’t posted since October.

It’s just foreign to me to carry ammo and guns without them being locked up. Cultural differences.

Those running boards should be power retracting. You can set them to automatically fold out, manually, or just not at all.

I find that people who buy new 4Runners are often people replacing their older 4Runners. In the 80s it was a truck. In the 90s is was an SUV (as we know today). As they got older their needs changed. They want the truck feel but they got 3 kids now. Dammit they need airbags. Now the kids are gone. But theure pushing 50. So they go for comfort. But still enough room to haul around the grandkids.

A co-worker of mine (middle aged woman) wants one of these bad. Her mid 00s Quest is over 200K now (original owner), and she’s ready to move on. Being used to Bush-era tech, the 4Runner should be an easy switch. I suspect she’ll be in one within 2 months.

It was between this and the Grand Cherokee for my wife. The Jeep was a little more plush for her. Just having a roll down rear window would’ve had me leaning 4Runner.

I don’t quite understand Toyota’s thinking with trying to position the 4Runner as something “high end” when the design and feel of the interior is so truck like and some what dated. Also the way they arranged the seat, just like in the Tacoma, is horrendous. To me they gave you ground clearance by shifting the floor up to your hips.

It’s like they’re designed as basic trucks and then the try to add a bunch of features on top, instead of designing it as though it were purpose-built for luxury. My 2014 Taco doesn’t even have intermittent wipers. Talk about cost cutting.

True story; the current 4Runner is within an inch or 2 of my 80 series in exterior dimensions, but its a LOT smaller feeling on the inside. I was super unimpressed when I drove one, we bought the fancy version with the V8 instead.

That’s another thing that irks me. Just the 4.0 V6. For seemingly forever. Really. That’s why I think the 4th gen with the 2UZ is so sought after.

The limited is a dumb car (tm) but the Trd off-road premium isn’t as much. I’m thinking of getting one with my job.

Kinja'd!!! "HammerheadFistpunch" (hammerheadfistpunch)
12/06/2017 at 23:13, STARS: 2

Trouble is (and this is coming from the Toyota source mouth) the 2UZ made LESS hp than the V6 when it came out (230 vs 245) and people saw that, the price premium and the mileage penalty and passed, even when it was updated to 260 people were still “meh, its only 15 hp more, I’ll save my monies” Not knowing of course what average power or power under the curve meant. our 263 hp 2uz feels a LOT stronger than even the updated 270 hp 1gr in the 5th gen. it was a poor take rate. To be fair, it does get crap mileage but man it moves. I suspect the next gen will get the 3.5, which is terrible news because its just not as powerful a motor, maybe a 4.0 version with 300 hp would do the trick. same block, wouldn’t be too hard to make higher flowing heads and call it a day.

I love the 2UZ. It paired with a 1st gen Tundra is nearly perfect. I’ll take crap mileage for power on demand. But I haven’t owned a car with decent fuel economy since college so...

Over priced, reliable junk. Dated period. Only reason it’s still being sold is because it’s made in Japan and needed it for the more popular Lexus GX.

Going from an FJ80 to a V8 4th-gen 4Runner changed my life. And the mileage doesn’t bug me because it’s still better than the 80 was, and the tank is big so the range is plenty for me (namely: father than my bladder will go between stops on a road trip).

Only problem with not buying a loaded 4Runner is on this generation Toyota cheaped out and removed the Torsen center LSD that provides awd mode from all trims except the Limited. It used to be standard but now unless you buy the Limited you’re stuck with part-time shift-on-the-fly 4wd.

Kinja'd!!! "Textured Soy Protein" (texturedsoyprotein)
12/07/2017 at 10:21, STARS: 0

If you think the ceiling is low and the interior is cramped on the 5th gen, try out the 4th gen. You’re sitting way down on the floor in that one looking way up over the dash. The 5th gen at least somewhat resembles a normal seating position.

I had an SR5 Premium or something like that for a weekend round trip from Madison to Chicago. I thought the step-in height was rather high and could use running boards.

The Limited that you sat in is the only way to get the Torsen center LSD that used to be standard on all trims on the 4th gen but Toyota cheaped out and ditched it on everything except the Limited on the 5th gen. All the other trims are stuck with part-time 4wd with no center differential.

Gross silver-painted knobs and dash material. Absolute garbage considering how much these cost and the fact that the engine is 15 years old and the transmission is 10 years old.

That’s about what I get and it’ll get me 80-100 miles farther than the 80 did, faster and in greater comfort. I’ll take it. My judgement may be impacted by my other car’s combination of small tank and terrible mileage though.

It think it was always limited only. At least with the 4th gen as well as the 5th. 3rd gen didn’t have a Torsen center either.

Electronic on-demand awd/ft4wd was introduced on the 3rd gen 99-00 Limited and standard on all trims for 01-02. The 99-00 Limited had an optional rear locker, all 01-02 trims used ATRAC.

Torsen was standard on all 4th gens. There were two t-cases: the V6 had a rwd mode, the V8 did not, but both had Torsen. The 09 Trail Edition had an optional rear locker.

(Also, for whatever reason, Torsen was standard on the stick shift FJ but not the automatic.)

I look at the age of the trans and engine as selling points to be honest. Tried and true. I mean its still 270 hp and 278 in a nice low stress, low revving engine, pretty competitive given the intentionally low rev range. The 5 speed is a little dated, no question, but its rock solid and its not like going from 6 to 8 really helped the land cruiser get better mileage.

The dash is an abomination though.

Im really interested to see what the next design brings I bet you its the 3.5 from the Tacoma with a little more aggressive timing and a few more revs to get it up to 300 hp and the new 8 speed from the Land Cruiser. Hopefully they tone down the doofy looks and focus on usability a little. The chunky knobs are nice and usable and all but so dorky and late 90's “tough”.

the 3rd gen didn’t have a torsen center I can tell you that for sure, it was either open or open over VC.

You are right about the torsen in the 4th gen, but I didn’t realize it had it as an option on the part time system.

they are on track to sell over 118,000 4runners this year and 180,000 Tacoma’s. That Toyota GR tooling is LONG since paid for.

Right, I knew the 3rd gen wasn’t Torsen. But I had it in my head that the multi-mode system on the 3rd gen was electronic on-demand with a clutch pack, because it often is referred to as electronic in some way, but it’s actually an open diff. It’s just shifted electronically.

Kinja'd!!!

Anyway, point is, 4Runners had standard center diffs of some kind from 01-09.

Here’s the ’99 Limited with rear locker that I owned for a couple days :

Headroom seems to be an issue on Japanese cars.

For a short while I had a Lexus ES350—thoroughly nice car and a roomy interior, except for the headroom which left my short hair brushing the headliner at the roof rail. The sunroof takes an inch, but even without it I would still have been too close.

I’m 6'1 and I can’t imagine why they still sell mainstream cars with such poor headroom.
