The Accord is definitely a Texas car

Kinja'd!!!

It’s about 40 degrees (F) and raining and it was hard to start and would stall soon after starting. Hopefully it’s just the distributor acting up, since I have the new one already. Although I don’t really want to put it in today, because of the cold.

And yes, as usual everyone is freaking out about the rain. I’ve heard more horns honked today than in the past 6 months and have seen the aftermath of two wrecks. One appeared to be a ram spinning out and hitting a transformer or some other big electrical device.

And of course half the people are driving around without lights on and other general assholery. Like a 370Z that was the second car at an intersection without a light and decided to pull out, skip the guy in front and make a blind left turn.

Checks out.

Now I’m in a catch 22. If I don’t replace the distributor, I’ll have to walk in the cold. But if I replace the distributor, I’ll have to be in the cold to do it. And then that might not even solve the issue. :(

Nissans are the official car of poor BMW drivers.

the swap ought to go pretty quick though...... 20 min tops?...... you might pull the cap off to the old one and look and see what the contacts look like before you get to the big work........

Heh, yeah. My buddy and I are constantly making fun of each other with the phrase “that’s your community man...” used whenever someone driving a nissan (in my case) or a pontiac (in his case) did something awful, or has modified their car in a terrible way.

I have to check the cap. Because there’s a connector that lies in between the cap and metal part. The cap I ordered from rock Auto doesn’t have a cut out for it and it sits tilted on the distributor, because of it. I went to a parts store and looked at theirs, but it didn’t have a cut out either. So I’ll need to check that out and see how it works on the old one.

Although it should only be like 10 minutes to swap them. It’s only two bolts holding it in.

1. Get the engine compartment warm and figure out how to unplug the distributor unplugged before trying anything. Every honda distributor plug is I have ever opened so well sealed that it took breaking the latch and extreme force to open. and that was summer and all had been off before. I guarantee that pulling a virgin distributor in the winter it will be a SOB.

2. End some mark on the casting that is consistent between the old and new distributor and scribe an alignment mark on the adjoining head. That way, you can pull the old distributor and plug on the new one and not have to set the timing again. Do the same on the old to make it easy to install when your new one fails. (see below)

3. Save the old distributor as cheap rebuild distributors have flakey ignitors and will likely fail. Having the old one as a spare is wise. PS, your problem may be the shaft seal is shot and the distributor is full of oil.. Hit it with some brake cleaner and keep as a spare.

PS, have you pulled your spark wires and per chance the ends are soaked with oil? Leakey valve cover o rings will do that.

Thankfully I don’t have to worry about timing, since it’s a Hitachi distributor and from what I’ve heard the ECU can set the timing on them (it’s the two bolt instead of the three bolt)

Also your right about the oil. The shop I took it to to get the alignment did a once over on it, since they knew I’d just bought it, and said the internal seal was bad on it.

Good thing that it’s easy to swap out. So I can just keep it in the trunk for when this one fails!

I pulled them before I had this issue and they were fine. I’ll double check though. Because the valve covers are leaking a little.

Hmmm - I didn’t know that the later Accords had a fixed timing at the distributor. Learn something new every day.

This must be the type of cap that you are looking for. Not sure where you would find it if it is different than honda’s. I’d get a file and clearance the cap and use some RTV to seal it.

Today in morning rush traffic I saw a ratty lowered 350Z with no front bumper try to race a BMW i8. It was surreal. Albuquerque is a strange place. Somehow the weather is actually better here right now but I can’t wait to be in SA on Friday.
