consumer reports used to include number of exposed interior screws in their evaluations.

I do not like that the cap screws are facing up, excellent for retaining water.

I do not mind exposed screws otherwise. I take the Holden Caufield view and see an exposed screw as honest.

I sometimes share that disdain, until I find myself forced to disassemble half of the vehicle to replace a bulb. Then I’m suddenly pining for the good ol days.

Im for it. so long as the hardware is quality I think it can add to the charm of a vehicle. Rather this than plastic clips that fall apart when you look at them wrong in 20 years.

IMO, there’s nothing wrong with seeing fasteners on a vehicle. It often makes the part more serviceable and speeds up the job and I’m always appreciative of those stainless JIS screws on my Land Cruiser. I feel like work and function based vehicles need to adopt more of this.

Exposed fasteners on a $230k AMG? Yeah, that kind of sucks.

The worst part? The top signal screws are Phillips head, and the sidemarkers are Torx.

THEY DON’T EVEN MATCH.

That plastic, fake vent one the SL is unforgivable. It looks like shit. The SL looks like shit in general, I think, they SLS is the right shape.

I want more exposed fasteners on cars, you know why? Those shitty fucking plastic bullshit clips always break, and even if they don’t break, they lose retention, then what are you going to? tape the fucker on?

This goes double for anything on the interior of the car. You know why 1960's dashboards and interiors didn’t squeak and rattle? because everything was steel and held in by a fucking screw or bolt!

Make things easy to service at the (minor) expense of aesthetics.

You will have at least one blinker left when thieves are done with you... no one carries phillips AND torx

p.s. Hey everyone, this guy might steal your blinker fluids! Get him!!!

I don’t actually know if you’re a guy or girl or.... other.... or how to even “get” you... but we will make note of you!!! Blinker fluid siphoner

I work in the pipe organ industry (yes we still exist). It’s not unusual to encounter slot, Philips and Robertson (square) screws in the same instrument. Particularly if it’s an old organ that’s been partly modernized.

Pozidrives too sometimes.

Absolutely agree with you here.

Visible screws are far superior to hidden hardware that can fail, and if you’re making the hardware visible, use quality stuff.

Exposed fasteners on a $230k AMG? Yeah, that kind of sucks.

Why? Isn’t the whole charm of the G class is that it’s style is more “functional and tough” than most?

I dunno. I guess if you’ve got $230k to spend on an impractically modified SUV, maybe you’re ok with the screws.

I don’t mind them if they are built into the design. Nice hardware can look good if utilized correctly. I would prefer a nice looking screw that looks purposeful over a cheap plastic cover.

I’m not so against it. In this video he harps on about everything from the door-mounted spare to the exposed hinges to the grab handle...If buyers wanted a modern Merc they’d get one of the infinite Merc SUVs. They want the old/retro/whatever touches. If Merc got rid of these the G-Wagen wouldn’t exist.

I dunno. They’re intentionally left. It’s not just Merc being cheap. Like a Jeep, though a Jeep is far more practical.
